Re: Nokia lumia 800 micro usb damage

Thanks for all the help and support. I had written to support.discussions@nokia.com last week but haven't received a response. I also raised a complaint in the complaints section of contact us but that seems to have raised another ticket.

I am hopeful that Nokia will repair or replace the phone and do so quickly. I am not sure I will be able to repair the 800 myself.....

Re: Nokia lumia 800 micro usb damage

Nokia called me yesterday and indicated that my phone has been taken up for investigation. Today, I got an SMS that the phone can be collected from Nokia Care. Am overjoyed that they fixed the phone and returned it in such a short time. Had scuff marks on the plastic near the SIM card slot and USB slot. I guess that is where the screwdriver went in. All in all, I am happy that they fixed the phone and did so promptly......They have definitely retained me as a customer......

Re: Nokia lumia 800 micro usb damage

I have the same problem, micro usb damage. Seems like a weakness of this phone...

The usb connector is sweated and not plugged on the engine board.

Now I want to buy a new engine board, but nokia don't sell spare parts.

Does anybody now if there's a possibility to buy them?

Re: Nokia lumia 800 micro usb damage

I'm an electronic engineer working in design and production of electronics. My friend has a Nokia Lumia 800 with the same issue. I've disassembled the phone (following the official Nokia disassembly guide) and found that the USB connector has NOT been loaded on the board correctly (see image). It is at an angle to the mother board, and one side is raised as a result. This would have put a lot of pressure on the connector when mated, causing it to break.

In this instance the plastic that contains the mating contacts to the outside world has broken. Also, internally where these contacts turn into pins, the solder joints to the board have completely broken.

This is clearly a manufacturing fault and can in no way be blamed on the user.

Feel free to boycott Nokia in the future.

Re: Nokia lumia 800 micro usb damage

My usb connector came adrift in my 800 as well after just 4 months from new. I took it back to the shop (CarphoneW.) and was told I would have to pay. I started talking about 'not fit for purpose' and 'sale of goods act' and all the other buzz words from Trading Standards web page. They then agreed to repair it at no cost to me. Within a week I had it back.

The guy in the shop admitted that he sees 1 or 2 of these returns every week.

Re: Nokia lumia 800 micro usb damage

I have exactly the same, i was taking off the charger from the micro usb port and i barely make force to it and the next thing i know was that micro ubs port was broken, so i went to my service phone and they told me that it was definetely usseles because i CAN'T be repared at all .. and the worst thing is that bought that phone 6 months ago.. and it's unbelievable .. I'm really **bleep** off because if my service phone says that do nothing because it's out of warranty due to bad manipulation then who is going to response? ...

Re: Nokia lumia 800 micro usb damage

For you who won't get it repaired for free and have some good soldering skills

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Nokia-Lumia-800-USB-Micro-USB-Connector-8002354-/330837674864?pt=UK_...

It requires pretty good soldering equipment.

To remove the defect connector use a fine dremel. BE CAREFUL when cutting it loose!!

Re: Nokia lumia 800 micro usb damage

I have the same problem recently & was asked to pay 4850/- for the replacement :smileysad:

Its' really a pity to spend this much amount. I have now purchased a Mercury Mobile instead paying this huge amount.

Nokia have always been known for its sober phones & caliber quality when it comes to phones;

Re: Nokia lumia 800 micro usb damage

I bought three Nokia Lumia 800 early January 2013 in France. After one month of use and a max of 30 connect/disconnect cycles the USB port is broken on one phone. I contacted the Europe Nokia contact centre. I was told that this is a physical dammage and not covered by waranty. So this is exactly the same situation experienced by all other participants in this forum.  I saw the advice given for Netherland and UK. Does anyone know how I should manage that in France?

Many thanks in advance

Re: Nokia lumia 800 micro usb damage

It is always tricky when it comes to physical damage. You need to prove that it is due to a manufacturing defect. The discretion lies with the care point so it is them you have to convince.

Re: Nokia lumia 800 micro usb damage

I'm amazed at Nokia suggesting this isn't covered by warranty as it's physical damage.

This is clearly different from the phone being scratched or ether glass being broken. All you can do with the USB port is plug the charger in. Are they seriously suggesting there is a right or wrong way of doing that. If the phone isn't robust enough to allow the user to do that it's a design flaw, not a user fault.

There are several ways in which you can damage the port even if it is robust enough for daily plugging/unplugging of charger. Most of them involve accidents with the phone while charger is connected - dropping it, stepping on it, tripping on the cable and ripping the plug out under an angle, etc.

I agree that it is not the same as a broken screen, but I guess it depends on local interpretation. I only wanted to point out that it can also be damaged by a user fault, not matter how unlikely or not.
