Outlook Sync

This is a mess.

I'll admit I wasn't happy when Symbian and Meego were dropped, but I hoped.

Now, I'm frustrated and angry.

When I came to get a new 'phone I wondered why I couldn't find one with as much memory as my N97 (64gb) or with a physical qwerty keyboard.  Two/three years of progress? Where?

When my N97 finally broke, I ordered a Lumia, I figured that at least a Windows device should work properly with Windows applications on my PC.  I mean, the 'phone might still lack the other features I just mentioned, but at least it would do that.

Wrong.

Why is there no way of transferring contacts, calendar, to do items, etc. without firstly getting a hotmail account and secondly using my data allowance, ie. paying to access my own personal data?  The same with "cloud" storage, what a con!  Why should I pay to access my data, and what about when I have no access to mobile signal or wifi, which is often?

I thought I'd give it a chance, but this 'phone seems to do nothing I want it to do and a whole bunch of stuff I'm not interested in.  If Nokia Suite doesn't support these 'phones by the weekend it's going on eBay and I'll either get an Android phone (and I hate Google) or I'll get another N97.  They're clunky but they do what I want them to do (and they're smaller - I hate how unnecessarily huge the Lumia is, I hadn't realised that before I unboxed it).

Re: Outlook Sync

I think the problem is that you don't know how to do the Outlook stuff properly.

Why do you need Nokia suite to support the Lumia? Zune is used instead...

The lumia may be a bit thicker than other phones because it has superior build quality. Nokia didn't want to make a phone that shatters into a thousand pieces the first time you knock it off the edge of a table.

Re: Outlook Sync

Please tell me how to sync contacts, calendar, to-do items, notes and documents with Zune.  Maybe there's a special hidden section?  I can only see how to sync music, videos and photos.

And I'm not worried about depth/thickness - the N97 is much thicker, but not as tall or wide.

Re: Outlook Sync

actually you cant sync the Lumia 800 with Outlook, or any windows phone for that matter, with Zune.

What you can do is sync your Outlook to a Live Account, and then this Live Account is synced to the phone through the Internet.

If you have a Microsoft Outlookv2007 you need Microsoft Office Outlook Hotmail Connector.

You can find this here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/microsoft-office-outlook-hotmail-connector-overview-H...

If you have Microsoft Outlook 2010 do the following:

- Open Microsoft Outlook 2010

- In the File menu click Add Account.

- Enter the information and credentials for your Windows Live account

- Click on Contacts and you should now see a new contact book for your Windows Live account here

- Select the contacts from your Outlook Contacts book, and drag them over to the Windows Live contact section.

If you have Microsoft Outlook 2007:

- First download and install Microsoft Office Outlook Hotmail Connector.

- Open Microsoft Outlook 2007 and click Outlook Connector in the menu

- Choose Add a New Account and enter the information and credentials for your Windows Live account

- On the File menu choose Exit and close and then restart Microsot Outlook 2007

- Click on Contacts and you should now see a new contact book for your Windows Live account here

- Select the contacts from your Outlook Contacts book, and drag them over to the Windows Live contact section.

Then sync your phone with your Windows Live ID

Re: Outlook Sync

Thanks for the sensible reply.

As I said, I need to have a hotmail account, and then pay for the provilege of accessing my own data, by syncing online.  This is a shambles.

Re: Outlook Sync

When you have your contacts into Windows live, how do you get them onto the phone?

I have my hotmail account set up on my lumia and have just installed the hotmail connector into outlook and dragged my contacts into there, but they're not appearing on the phone still.

Thanks for any help

Re: Outlook Sync

Also, is this a two-way sync? So when a new person calls my phone and I save their details - does this get saved to Hotmail and Outlook automatically?

Re: Outlook Sync

I understand your gripe! I hate this windows live nonsense. I have my own personal domain so I had to upgrade my email account to exchange. Rather than £3/month I now pay around £7 just so I can sync my outlook emails, contact, calendar etc.

I love the interface of the phone but I don't really like the way they handled the contacts.

Re: Outlook Sync

I opted to synchronise my gmail rather than hotmail account when copying contacts using outlook connector came up with an error message. Used gsync to sync my calendar in outlook and exported all my contacts in csv to gmail. Created my gmail account using Exchange setting in Lumia and it has worked very well. Only downside is that contacts are synced only with gmail but not outlook but that's not a problem for me.

Exactly so. I'm not willing to pay for that - we shouldn't have too.

Re: Outlook Sync

This is my only gripe with such an amazing phone too.

Why can't I locally sync up my contacts and calendar entries from Windows Outlook to my Windows phone, when my Apple iPhone can sync up fine, without having to add 'cloud' based email accounts?

I'm unable to add my email account on the Windows phone due to having to use a secure company VPN to access my emails.  No 'cloud' based fun for me unfortunately.

Re: Outlook Sync

How unhelpful!

Zune doesn't even know what Outlook is!

After a week of research I finally, and reluctantly, concluded that the only way to Sync with Outlook was to subscribe to Microsoft Office365.

Re: Outlook Sync

I must agree on this issue.. It is a serious problem, that Lumnia 800 is not supported by PC Suite, or if Zune would just have the posibility to synchronise with Outlook.

I do not wish to have my data on Live, iCloud, Gmail etc. I really just like the idea of having my data local...!

Anyway.... Hotmail outlook connector.. Thats just **bleep**... really..

However, i really like the Lumnia 800, so i am also willing to do a bit... So finally i see i can use Office 365... I just have ONE huge problem... My company uses outlook 2003.. So i cannot use the Office 365.

Really.. Dear Nokia.. I was finally ready to go back to use Nokia yet again.. But i cannot use Lumnia 800 if it cannot synchronise the most simpliest way...............................

I am disapointed. Hopefully i'll find someone who will buy a brand new phone..................

Re: Outlook Sync

Incredibly, it is not possible to sync Outlook with WM7 phones. There is a very long thread on this subject here, with hundreds of other incredulous, angry and dissatisfied WM7 owners:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/winphone/forum/wp7-sync/does-windows-phone-7-sync-to-outlook/48ae...

What you can do is use some complicated and clunky system with a hotmail account and outlook connector to sporadically sync contacts and calendar - but you can't sync tasks or notes, or categories, or most of the other stuff that makes Outlook useful.

WM7 is a useless operating sytem to me.

Even more unbelievably, despite all the complaints they are getting, Microsoft seem determined to handicap their phones by refusing to offer what customers want.

Re: Outlook Sync

Agree with everyone.  I assumed that with Windows installed synchronising with Outlook would be a breeze.  Instead it's a disaster.  Why on earth would I want to go through hoops to do it when my iphone connected with no trouble at all. Sad to say the Nokia is going back in the box and back to the shop where it will be exchanged for an iphone. What a pity.

Re: Outlook Sync

I must add my anger with yours. I canot believe i got a windows phone and i can not sync with outlook using my computer at home. Please tell me why on earth i spend all this money for this stupid idea.
Why they do not advertise this detail on public but instead they let us find out after.
It is really a shame for Nokia accepting this attitude from Microsoft.
I hope to see soon a software update or this phone goes to hell and never buy nokia again.
