I have just upgraded to the Lumia 920 and would appreciate knowing if the car charger for my old Nokia N8 will work satisfactorily without frying my new pride and joy ?

It will definitely not fry the 920 and highly like to be underpowered. You need a charger that is at least 1A or preferably 2A for the 920.
