I have had the same issue with the screen going off (both visuals and touch), immediately after dialing a number, screen would momentarily recover on a quick double tap of the power button. Dust and lint was seen in the front camera window. The Nokia care centre I went to said it was back to manufacture for a repair, but as I was unable to do that i figured I would try the air duster, which in short, worked.
if you look really close around the screen there is a micro foam looking seal between the case and the plastic screen surround, immediately above the front camera and the prox sensor, there appears to be a small gap in this seal. I would suggest a possible manufacture defect!? Does anybody have the same thing?

Better keep the can of compressed air handy. This isn't a fix but a temporary relief.

I've been having this problem for about two weeks now, and I've only had my 920 for less than a month!
Does this affect all 920's? or just a handful? Should I try to get it repaired under warranty? do I need a new phone? what are the next steps?
ps. I love the phone but this issue is driving me nuts.

I have tried everything suggested in this thread, the only thing that might work temporarily is compressed air. The problem keeps coming back however. Nokia should provide a fix or at least make an announcement!
The problem is quite annoying and makes the phone unusable in certain cases (e.g. skype video calls).

I bought my lumia in Germany (8 dec 2012) and I also facing the black screen problem during calls. Blowing in to phone helped for some days, but today (3 jan 2013) nothing worked for me.
During calls I get a black screen and I have a lot of dust around my front facing camera.
I really want an answer from nokia (I know they are reading this forum because they edited some post above).
What can we do Nokia? Bring back the phone for a new one?
Tomorrow when I have daylight I will post some video's and pictures of the problem.
Wainting for an answer atm

Hi @Rienkie,
I'm sorry to see you really have this problem. If the puffing thing mentioned up there does not help you, I suggest you contact the place where you bought your device or find a local Nokia care point near you via this link ( http://www.nokia.com/global/support ) to get your phone fixed or replaced.

Well I tried going to the store and later to a Nokia Service Point. They refuse to replace the phone, since it has already been 30 days after the purchase. It is clearly a manufacturing defect, and Nokia needs to assume responsibility.
They offered to try and fix the problem, but that means that I will have to live without a phone for two weeks.

Nokia have assumed responsibility by offering to repair your phone for free under warranty as per standard terms.
I am sure they would be open to suggestions as to how you can have the phone and at the same time have it at the NCP for repair.

Sent in mine for repair yesterday to my phone provider (Rogers). It'll take a few weeks but let's see what they can do. Really annoying as I haven't even used it for a month yet.
Can someone confirm this is only on SOME handsets and not all? Suppose nokia gave all of us new phones, would we all experience the problem again in a month...?

Go to setting>display>proximity sensor
Reset it's setting, do not cover you phone while doing this. This could be solved your problem but not permanently it could occour again.... so again do the same process.....

Same problem. I first noticed it after a couple weeks of ownership when using Skype. By week four, I noticed dust building behind the screen in front of the front-facing camera and by week five the dialpad blackout started occurring with the regular phone app.
It seems obvious that this is a manufacturing defect. My wife's iPhone 4 is at least a year old and it has no dust obscuring the front-facing camera. Dissapointing that I have to mail the phone in for repairs to Nokia, meaning I'll be without a crucial business communication device for at least a week. Not sure how I'll swing that.
I debated upgrading my iPhone 3g to a Nokia and, though I like this phone and the OS, would surely have stayed with Apple and their known customer service had this defect been publicized. Nokia should give all of us a new phone after fixing their manufacturing process. Perhaps if the media gets ahold of this issue the struggling company will take our concerns more seriously.

I have the same problem also;
My opinion that keeping blowing and cleaning is not a practical solution and not guaranteed also,
and we need to do that frequently ![]()
I tried and did not work...
NOKIA please provide a permanent solution

Cleaning worked for me too. I had to clean the speaker slot very thoroughly though. I used a straw to blow air and then tried to gently clean the rest of the dust out with a paper towel.

Same issue here on a French Lumia 920. It's really anoying...

This doesnt really fix the problem for me and it would seem most people, the problem tends to keep happening either intemittently or continuously.
Another thing that kind of works is to soft restart the phone with the proximity (the area above the N in Nokia and the user facing camera) sensor covered, or cover the whole top user facing part of the phone, or have it completely in the dark. This works better than blowing the dust for me, but it is not a fix for the problem.
Considering this problem could cost you a lot in calls or similar if you cannot hang up i hope there is a fix coming from Nokia and i will be prioritised by either Nokia or the Service Providers.
