Dear novim, I guess it is a connector not connecting properly issue and not a sensor not sensing :-).
Thank you gsenter.
I guess the approximity sensor will be opening the electric curcit when an object is close to it, So to the curcit it self the senson being disconnected would look the same.
Try going to a Nokia service with the pictures i sent and they will do it so you don't void the warenty.

I can create the issue and fix it over and over. I actually just got a replacement phone from att because my cyan one is having the same issue. I had to pick black, because they aren't getting anymore cyan. Anyways, just humor me on this but wipe on the proximity sensor with a clean cloth. I can sit here and recreate the same problem by touching the front of the sensor with greasy fingers about 6-9 times and it causes the issues everyone is having. As soon as I wipe away with a shirt in the top right area, it is fixed. I turn my phone sideways to watch videos and I also touch up there to check my battery status. Please try this simple solution and tell me if it works.
I just kept calling my lan line number at my house so I could keep testing and during the call I was able to make my screen stay black when it was away from my face and when I wiped it away with a clean cloth,, it lit up again.

I had my device doing great for the last 3 weeks... UNTIL TODAY !!!
I have this issue now and it's driving me insane. Worst part is that I got the phone while I was abroad for a business trip. I don't think local Nokia Care does cover it !
I am now stuck with a phone that can't make calls and can't sell it nor replace it.
Please any suggestion here ?

YAY!
Using the workaround previously-supplied by AbuS3oodQatari (Note: simply pressing the upper left-hand corner; not opening the phone and modifying the internals), I'm now finally able to workaround this issue. Phew!
As this is easily-reproducible, I'll be returning my phone for a replacement.
Thanks everyone,
Scott

Just visit this website and enter youre IMEI number
http://www.nokia.com/in-en/support/warranty-checke
Find out if your Nokia device is still within it’s warranty perioid.

It's still under warranty but not in my country. So I have to send it back and cost of shipment is too high

oke, I understand that shipment cost could be high, but the phone cost more I guess?
I thought the shipmentscost are free if you live in the same continent as where you bought the phone?
So if you live in Austria and bought the phone in Portugal (both Europe), you can send it free for repair.
I live in Holland, but my device came from Germany, I checked my device in at the Dutch site and could send it for free to a Nokia repair in Germany ![]()
Maybe check it double time.

I got it from Hong Kong, different continent.
Cost of shipping = 140$ ( send and receive ) ![]()

Had as of today the same problem with proximity censor. I can see from outside dust accumulated inside cover of camera. The problem is not hardware/software but DUST getting through audio plug connector / speaker. If Nokia listening, they quietly fix it in new batches but they NEVER admit it as design flaw, TOO much in stake from nokia/microsoft partnership. The best hardware maker apparently is Samsung, my Focus still alive. So it will be my next phone for sure. Meanwhile will try to use dust blower and ordered on ebay 3.5mm rubber plug blocker. Cheers.

Monday i send my phone to a nokia repair center.....
my problem was dust in the front facing camera and black screen during calls.
This is what they have done
.delete files
.settings
.functiontest
.software update
I can see there is just less dust in the front facing camera, but still got black screens during calls!!!

Blowing will only induce more dust into the device.
The device is meant to be sealed so that no dust can penetrate. When you are blowing you are forcing the dust to accumulate as you're not living in a dust-free environment.....

Same problem. Started few days ago. Blowing on top of phone did nothing.

I now have the same problem.
I started using the stock headset with cord like a week ago (prior to that I've been using BT) and I guess that has something to do with it. Blowing hard into the 3,5 socket solved the problem temporary for a few days but today when I got back to work and plug in my headset again the problem returns.
