Re: Proximity sensor doesn't switch off - Lumia 920

Has anyone had this problem since that "display+touch" update a few days ago?  So far, mine's been behaving well, even after I turned automatic brightness back on.  Early days yet, but it sure would be nice to think it's fixed.  This is the longest it's been working for me in quite some time.

Re: Proximity sensor doesn't switch off - Lumia 920

Just had notice of my 920 which i sent to Nokia care for repair has been replaced for this problem and is being shipped.
So there IS a problem out there with some devices that is not a software fix and is a hardware or design/manufacturing problem.
One happy guy here 920 has been missed although had privilege of using an 820 from Nokia connects so i have not missed my windowsphone experience and to be honest it has not been diluted usind a 'lesser' model 😃

Re: Proximity sensor doesn't switch off - Lumia 920

I don't know if the root cause is a hardware issue, software issue, build quality issue or some combination of those, but there are at least two software workarounds I can think of that will resolve the problem:

1. IF (a voice call is active AND screen is blank  AND user presses the lock button) THEN (activate screen, disable proximity sensor UNTIL (call ends OR user pushes lock button)).  This could be optional behavior, to accommodate those lucky souls that don't suffer from this problem.

or

2. Have a display option to not use the proximity sensor at all during calls.

That said, mine is still working after the last display+touch update, and I am with no particular evidence hoping that those two things are related.

Re: Proximity sensor doesn't switch off - Lumia 920

How do you get to use Nokia Care in Norway? I spoke to Nokia here and they said that repais had to go through my carrier Telenor. They also said they had a fix for this issue in their repair shop but this doesn't help me as Telenor sends the phone to mCare, which serivces all phones I guess. They didn't know how to fix mine however and just gave me a refurbished replacement phone with the same problem.

So Nokia Care can fix it, but how can I use them instead of mCare? Telenor says I don't have any other option but to turn it in again to the same place. Which is absurd.

Re: Proximity sensor doesn't switch off - Lumia 920

Having the exact same problem. My phone has been back to Nokia twice already and is waiting to go back for a third time. It seems they just clean out the dust and don't fix the problem. Their support has been extremely unhelpful in getting the problem fixed as all they suggest is to send it back again for repair. So far I've been without my phone for 25 days due it being repaired and is still not fixed.

Don't expect this poor service for a flagship phone that I've spent lots of money on.

Re: Proximity sensor doesn't switch off - Lumia 920

To me this is simply unacceptable that Nokia is not handling this better. This is not a new issue, this is something that is occuring on many devices across the globe. How can a phone be functional if the phone aspect doesnt even work properly? I have had to power off my phone just to end a call or wait uncomfortably for the other person to hang up. As a company trying to show the world that they are still relevant and ready to be a global competitor this service and this phone so far is a mismanaged mess. Nokia, wake up.

Re: Proximity sensor doesn't switch off - Lumia 920

Yep, this sure does seem to work. Either use your own air or use some compressed air, like I did.  If you hadn't noticed, the front facing camera sure does accumulate dust.

Re: Proximity sensor doesn't switch off - Lumia 920

Blowing air into it is not a fix for the problem, it is an emergency measure that will work for some people sometimes.. So is pressing on corners. Mine isn't creaky and loose like some units so there is nothing to press that gives way.

Plenty of people, myself included, have been told by Nokia that they have a permanent fix for it. But the phone will have to go into service with them, so the problem here is an unwillingness to admit to the problem, which would then certainly lead to the recall of hundreds and thousands of phones at their expense.

Re: Proximity sensor doesn't switch off - Lumia 920

Ok.. after shipping my phone off to Nokia Repair Center for the second time, they sent me a shiny new one.  This one appears to be working great, and not having the issues w/ proximity sensor / dust... at least not yet.  I've had it for about a week now, and I've been checking closely to see if dust appears to be accumulating, and to date, it is not :smileysurprised:).  I was fortunate to have both a spare phone, and an AT&T Store right down the street (which swapped my SIM card out/back to my old Samsung Focus).  So, I got the replacement 920 after about a week, and all is well.  I still love this phone, but am still a bit nervous that the issue may come back.  Although I do believe I was noticing dust within the first week on the old Lumia 920.  Kudos to the Nokia Repair Center in Fort Worth, Texas for doing the right thing.  Sounds like they may be starting to at least acknowledge the issue!

Re: Proximity sensor doesn't switch off - Lumia 920

Same story here... On my 2nd 920 after 1st replaced by Nokia Care under warranty. Sent me a refurb. Can live w/o the FFC, but the proximity sensor?!?!?!? No dice, Nokia! About to send my refurb replacement unit back to Nokia Care as it's still under warranty, but **bleep**!!! Really lame and annoying... A flagship???

Re: Proximity sensor doesn't switch off - Lumia 920

OK, two things, one, thanks for that link to wpcentral, I need to pick up a few extra sizes of Torque screwdrivers and i'll attempt to fix the issue by opening it up and vacuuming out the dust + adding some foam around the missing areas over the weekend. Also on that link it said that there's now a team looking in to it which is good :smileyvery-happy: Finally, Nokia seems to be rolling out a new update which deals with "improvements to auto-brightness," anyone know if it could be related? http://www.neowin.net/news/nokia-rolling-out-updates-to-lumia-920-820--620

I've got a good feeling that vacuuming/wiping all that dust out though will fix the problem, so it seems we might have a permanent fix (at least for the people who are having problems with dust)

I'am also experiencing exactly the same!

Do you notice any change in beaviour if you tap the Power/Lock key as this sometimes brings screen back momentarily upon mine?

@aspergerguy.  good point.  I thought I had posted that here, but forgot.  When I press the power/lock button twice, I get a very very short glimpse of the on-call screen.  If I'm really quick I can hit the end call or speaker button.

If I hit the speaker button, and the call is on loudspeaker, I have full control again.

Interestingly enough, I tried it with bluetooth again, and the screen locks as if I'm using the phone noramlly

Re: Proximity sensor doesn't switch off - Lumia 920

Gave my Lumia 920 for repair at Nokia care centre. I was told that the unit would be sent to L3 facitliy and that I would get it back only after 7 - 10 days. They gave me a standby set - Lumia 610.

Two days later, got a call informing me that my set has been repaired. Apparently, the unit had been cleaned and sensor was working flawlessly. There was no dust on FFC as well. However, over the next couple of days, the following problems surfaced:

  1.  Wireless charging was not working.
  2.  The Accelerometer was also not working.

What they actually did to the phone is anybody's guess. So I have given it back again today and have asked for a replacement. This should take another 10 days :smileymad:.

To me, it does not make any sense...simple cleaning resulted in these two far serious problems. What is wrong with Nokia support???

Will update the forum once I get the phone back...

Re: Proximity sensor doesn't switch off - Lumia 920

This is a recent email to support, no amount of blowing would fix any of my 920 units. Any comments welcome:

Since the commencement of a Orange/Tmobile contract I began on 17/01/2013 for a Lumia 920, I have had three hand sets. All have developed the same fault. The first handset functioned normally for about two days after which time the touch screen would turn black, the exact moment that the call button was pressed. The first time it happened (before I learnt about the two button reset procedure, which isn't workable because the date and clock resets to default each time you do it), I ended up leaving an involuntary six minute message on my bosses voice mail, of me complaining about my dis-functional Nokia. The first replacement handset did the same after three days. The second replacement did slightly better and lasted over two weeks before the same fault occurred on Saturday night. That means that in over two months I have only had a fully functional phone for a total of twenty three days, thanks to Nokia's suspect manufacturing issues, as far as I can see. Orange 'Windows Phone' division staff, tell me that they have had the same issues with both, early 820 and 900 models.

The first question that support staff ask is related to the proximity sensor/screen cover issue. This isn't the case as i have never used one. I noticed, on close inspection of the forward facing camera, that after a period of time tiny bits of dust were visible within the lens casing. The thought occurred to me that if an improperly applied screen cover could interfere with the proximity sensor, then maybe a badly fitted dust seal could do the same. Its a theory that must have occurred to others, I'm sure, I have included a macro shot of my Lumia to illustrate what I mean.

Again, Orange 'Windows Phone' division staff, tell me that they have had the same issues with both, early 820 and 900 models. Have you learnt nothing?

The 920 is your flagship phone. I hope Holly Willoughby's phone still works, when am I going to get one that does? I was prepared to be a good ambassador for Nokia, I think that iphone 5's and S3's are boring by comparison to my 'Channel 4 drama' dream Nokia, but Apple and Samsung run rings around you and make Nokia look incompetent. Very disappointing, indeed.
