What bluetooth car stereo headunits wotrk with Nokia 920? (UK)

I was seconds from purchasing 920 to replace iPhone4, when asked to test the use of USB/miniUSB cable to the front USB port on my JVC headunit.  'Cannot play' was the response from the head unit.

Sent an email to Nokia who confirmed it would not work.

Bluetooth adaptor for my headunit is £89, so I'd rather buy a new single DIN headunit with Bluetooth included.

Your help is much appreciated.

Hi mate,

In comparison to say a N8, which I've tested with my Sony car stereo via USB, and it works, the 920 doesn't work, because it is using Media Transfer Protocol (is USB yes, but not the completely free and useful Universal Mass Storage, which thumb drives, Nokia N8 are etc). That is the reason it won't play. You can always research if there are any head units that support MTP, but I believe they are few and far between as most support normal USB ports with UMS.

As such, this is a platform limitation of Windows Phone 8, so you can always leave feedback with them directly via the link: http://windowsphone.uservoice.com

As for buying the Bluetooth unit, that is your decision, and you gotta weigh that up. I know i just load my music onto a couple of thumb drives and keep them in the glovebox, less hassle and no cables to worry about :smileyhappy:

1000 thanks for the info - more detailed than I've been able to find elsewhere.

Much appreciated.

Still can't understand why Nokia would not include this functionality in the phone in the first place, as most people I know prefer to play and charge simultaneously through the USB method.  Oh well.

It's not Nokia that controls that functionality, it's Microsoft. I'm assuming you are in the UK, have you thought about visiting somewhere like Halfords that often have working head units on display? You could test various ones there.
