I bought some Mifare Classic 1k tags online hoping I could write and read some custom tags with the few apps on the marketplace but it doesn't seem the Nokia interacts with them well.
I found this on wikipedia.
"At the moment BlackBerry phones and the Nokia Lumia 610 can't read/write Tectile stickers ". (which are apparently based on Mifare Classic.)
I have found no other mention of what types of tags are supported, so that is my question. What types of tags are guaranteed to work with the 920?

I'm interested in this also for the 920, so I emailed a tag supplier here in the UK. Their response below. I've ordered the 38mm as suggested and will try as soon as they arrive.
"We have tested Mifare and NFC forum specified tags with the new Nokia’s and they work fine. We had heard rumours that the Nokia’s would not support Mifare, but they do.
Most people prefer the small, discrete, Mifare Classic 1K 25mm circles, but for true NFC spec we suggest 38mm or 25mm NTAG circles, though these have smaller memory sizes."

I've run some NFC tests with the 920 because I run an NFC marketing platform.
I wrote a review about the Lumia 920 NFC implementation http://www.tagonic.com/latest/easyblog/entry/nokia
Although this doesn't cover specific NFC tags I can confirm that it works well with MiFare UL tags. The use case of receiving a contact directly, and directing to web destinations works well.
Interestingly we haven't managed to successfully initiate a pairing with other NFC accessories (BH505 headphones or the 360 Speaker) at all. We'd be interested to know if anyone else has this issue.
But from a tag perspective we are confident that the Lumia 920 works with the MiFare UL tags.
Feel free to contact us at contactus@tagonic.com if you are looking for some tags that you want to program to go to a web destination. We'd supply them pre-programmed and you can virtually re-program them using the platform as opposed to having to physically re-write the tags.

To my previous post, the tags just arrived. Using 'NFC Interactor' from the store (trial version). I was able to program a url onto one and an SMS message to another. Both worked fine, tho' the SMS sending one did link me to the store to download another SMS app.
Now to stick these round the house!

So I reached out to the folks i purchased the Mifare classic tags and got the following response.
"It seems like Window 8 phones do have some compatibility issues with Mifare 1k NFC tags. You may be able to research a way to format the tags to NDEF which should allow your phone to use them."
I'll have to do some investigating to see if I can code something up to do this. All the apps in the marketplace don't seem to be able to do this.

So 38 mm NTAG are confirmed?

Worked for me, as per posts above.....

The Mifare Classic NFC tags are not one of the 4 standard tag types so it doens't work with Blackberrys, Windows Phones, and newer Android devices.
Stick with the tags from the 4 standard types: Topaz, NTAG, UL, ULC, and DesFire.

The first windows 8 phones have NXP controller chips and supports mifare classic nfc tags (and all other types). But.. the tags must be NDEF formatted already! Windows 8 OS (Lumia 920) can't read unformatted nfc tags.
The Lumia 610 doesn't support mifare classic nfc tags.
I agree with Alice, better avoid the mifare classic type. More and more mobile phones can't read these tags.

Also, the NTAG chips are already NDEF formatted, so that would probably be the best choice.
If you were to purchase the other types like UL or ULC, you could request NDEF formatting when you make the purchase.

In response to iamrupert - my Lumia 920 works perfectly with the 360 speaker.

Hi,
We have had a request from one of our customers at nfc-supplies / nfcdog about this, and the Mifare Classic 1K tags are supported for read/write if they have been pre-formatted. We have tested against the Nokia Lumia 820.
We preformat all our tags for quality and customer convenience, as some other NFC tag vendors do.
However, if you want cross compatibility with other platforms such as BlackBerry, the latest Nexus 4/10 or the cheaper Nokia NFC enabled handsets, we suggest using NTAG or other NFC Forum compliant tags.
NTAG's are available in a wide variety of form factors and are relatively cheap, though memory is limited.
Have fun
