lumia 820 - problems with temperatures below zero?

Today I went out in the cold with my phone to enjoy the first snow in my region. We had -9 °C and I tried to take some pictures with the phone. The phone itself felt quite cold, but had 70 % of battery. After 2 photos the camera button suddenly failed and I only could use the power button to lock the screen (didn't work correct either, because whe the screen was unlocked, I could move the lockscreen from the top to the bottom (like unlocking, but reverse).

Anything else didn't work.

I tried to restart the phone, but it kept saying "Bild bald!" (Don't know what's written in the English version, maybe goodbye). Soft reset didn't work in the cold (maybe volume controls went down, too)

The only solution was warming up the phone and then doing a soft reset.

Some thing still to mention:

- the phone was completely dry inside and did not contact any snow or water

- the sd card couldn't be recognised by the phone afterwards

- sd card works again fine on my laptop and didn't even need to be repaired

(for that topic: have a look here http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Nokia-Lumia/Lumia-820-sd-card-issues-and-freezing/m-p/1639620/highli...

@buddler

As a new device probably not enough charge/discharge cycles have been completed for battery to give it's best and would be interested to know results if battery is 100% charged, as can make quite a difference to cold weather performance.

I read somewhere that lithium batteries stop deteriorate with low temperatures and evenstop functioning at -20 celcius. Same happened to my video cam during winter 2010-2011. I suppose have to get the phone a coat too.

I can remember that the old lumias were used to take pictures in 20 km altitude and.. man... how can a Finnish phone maker sell phones not being able to manage Finnish temperatures? It was only -9 °C outside, I think -20 should be normal in most parts of Finnland in this time of year (hence the phone has been in my pocket before, it shouldn't have less than 5 °C).

And as mentioned above: No humidity and battery with nearly 70 %. After the reset, it still had around 60%.

After nearly 4 weeks of intense and constant use, battery cycling is no topic anymore.

The phone did not power of, some buttons and functions freezed, but not all.
