The phone is within the range of 3G network, the network signal is 3 or 4 bars out of 5 but when someone is calling me, he/she hears that I am out of range. The phone is unable to receive or send SMS-es too. But I can make calls in such situation! I have replaced SIM card but it did not help. When I switch to 2G it works and the network signal is of the same level or even weaker. I wonder, is this something wrong with the phone (e.g. wrong network signal level) or it is operator's fault?

I think, I know a cause. This is when phone is switch from UMTS 2100 to UMTS 900 or vice versa. Sometimes this swtching takes longer and if someone initiates a call during this time then he gets out of range or connection error message.
The pity, you cannot manually select a band in this phone.

Do you encounter (also in a alleviated form) symptoms like described in this thread http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Nseries-and-Symbia
I think users in there also reported that the "had signal" but weren't able to recieve calls (e.g. user NiceOne06 on page 2....)
well, if your phone works without any problems in 2G only mode then it may be something completely different .....

I do not encounter issues as described:
or here:

And this happens only in 3G. I investigated it further and it looks like this is really my carrier's fault, which has in the same area stations with both 900 and 2100 MHz. I even found some document about it but unfortunately it is only in Polish:
