To answer your original question:

I don't think it will make a blind bit of difference to the user experience if the operating flickers for a few seconds whilst it is booting.

I have never met anyone who considers this to be a problem and most people don't even notice it.

I can understand how an impatient person would feel at having to wait an extra 4 seconds longer before the phone can be used.

If an impatient person doesn't like this then unfortunately nothing can be done about it because this is normal behavior of phones with the S60v3FP1 operating system.

The only logical suggestion for anyone who cannot cope with this 4 second delay is to choose a different model, preferably not a smartphone.

By the way. Why do you switch your phone on and off all day?

When I'm driving (I don't want the distraction) and when I am out eating (I think it is discourteous, even if it is silent). Sometimes, I just don't want my phone on but want to keep in case the need arises.

Have you considered setting it to offline mode instead?

This would stop it from being a distraction and you don't get the "jump" when switching between offline and general profiles.

I do sometimes but if I know I have a 3 hour journey or similar I'd rather save battery.

Locking your phone in offline mode saves a lot of battery though...

Are you sure? Every S60v3FP1 device that i've used does this.

The more background apps you have the more it flickers.

I have heard a few people say this. Apparently the flicker starts to happen once you restore contacts etc from a backup. It's allegedly not apparent on a virgin device, although I can't substantiate that report yet with empirical evidence.

I was going to load v20 on my N95 8GB in the next few days (whenever it hits NSU) and see what it is like before and after restoring contacts etc

Obviously then we will know for sure if it is a built in 'feature' that is unavoidable as psychomania says, or an avoidable by-product of a data restore.

It doesn't happen any more or less for me based on background apps. It just does a 'jump' once (from power on) on the active standby screen, and then another once when you enter the menu.

Not Virgin the operator. Virgin as in - never restored from a backup.

Oh, well my phone is still a Virgin phone in that sense. The flicker is still there however.

Re: Any way to stop the after boot 'menu jump'?

My N82 has never been restored from a backup either, so you could say that it is a virgin.

All S60v3FP1's i've used do it straight out of the box.

The more background apps you install the more it flickers whilst it is loading them.

I've installed a lot of apps on mine and it flickers three times taking about 5 seconds.

If anyone read this whole post carefully and with understanding, he'll know how correct T-Rex was in his logic originally and, consecutively, how wrong Psychomania was.
And nobody else got his point. Surprising..

Alas, I was not involved in this post at that time.

T-Rex, if per chance you happen to read this, I fully got your point.
If we can desire many other features. Why can't we desire that smartphone's interface appear to user only when it is fully ready and not before that. Because if it appears before it is ready, it does harm, instead benefit....

Who are you to state who is right and wrong?

And what is the point in dragging a thread back up from April that you had no input in at the time?

The "menu jump" is perfectly normal and only happens once per boot so it's hardly a big or ugly problem.

zopfan - hello there in India! Glad I wasn't the only person in the world who found it a problem/distraction. I thought for a while I was!

Onto a different platform now so I don't have to worry about it anymore!

Re: Any way to stop the after boot 'menu jump'?

this is turning into a right nitpick. to be honest i've never noticed this before. Is this the same on all symbian phones? (as in flick when turned on)
I'll give an example.

when turning my LCD TV on it take times for the picture to appear, however I would like it to turn on the moment i press the button, but i understands that's how the technology is and live with it. I aint gonna be hassling sony about this.

i dont wanna come across blunt here, but you seriously need new hobbies if you cant wait 4 seconds.

I don't know about other Symbian phones but the N95-1 certainly has exhibited this in firmware versions 12, 21 and 30.

It's never bothered me. I just wait a second or two for the phone to finish booting and get on with something else meanwhile.
