I talked to some people that bought a 808 recently in Germany. No one had a 3G problem here with newer models. Maybe it depends on the provider & country, maybe Nokia has fixed this problem.
You should give it a try and tell us your experience. I already ordered a 808 and will give feedback here (altough it is a used unit and may be afflicted....) Then i can talk about Nokia care ![]()
Good luck

I dont know, its possible its a Malaysia variant. I'm really hoping this one works out fine, i have purposely left HSDPA turned on waiting for it to lock up or reboot bot so far it has not occured once.

Where did you get 1508?! I have 1507 with no other updates. Does it differ from country to country? I am in US.
Here is the latest on my phone. I had all the "standard" issues plus some additional ones. Sent my phone for repair, got it back about a month ago and can report on my findings. The additional issues (problem 5800 according to Nokia if I recall correctly) are resolved. The standard ones - not. I mean the reboots with the black screen, and the absence of a signal while indicator shows all bars. I does not happen often though. I only had a couple of reboots, and one lost signal in my recent trip to Seattle - for several hours I did not have a connection, although the phone showed that I did. At one point we have to admit the world is not perfect. I can live with this. The biggest thing for me is GPS, as SportsTracker still does not work well (yes, I know, start another GPS app, and then run the SportsTracker, but the whole thing is not stable. As soon as you loose your satellites - say, going inside - or pause SportsTracker, you are done. Everything is gone). I decided I can live with the phone for several years. The bad thing is that the Symbian is almost dead, and there is not much development on the side of apps or OS. For example, Google Maps, as someone mentioned on this forum, will not start on 808 without WiFi turned on, but it is a bug, not a feature - it will work even if there is no WiFi around, but I doubt it will ever be fixed. On the other hand, there will not be a comparable CAMERA-phone for many years, as I think. So I am OK with it (like I have a choice
). 4 stars it is. Enjoy your 808 but don't count it will become any better.

I sent my 808 in for repair on 12/26. A replacement arrived on 1/4 with 1507.
Went for a drive today and it rebooted. ![]()

Hi
I re-arrived in Germany today with my freshly reparied (Nokia Care Point walk-in - they replaced a transistor on the PCB) 808. I drove by train from a small ex-military Airport in the Bavarian contryside through many "white spots" to Stuttgart - a 4 hours trip -, having 3G + HDSPA (!) enabled, using O2 (the German provider with the weakest 3G coverage), the phone sometimes switching from 3G to EGPRS when the connection became weak, so the ideal scenario to trigger the bug. I was uploading photos to flickr all the time, in parallel checking news, writing e-mails and maxing out mobile internet in every possible way until I reached my flat rate limit. That operation would have 100% killed the phone before the reapir. I went through this without any issues and even without short-time freezes or anything. The phone just behaved great.
The Nokia Care Point in Ukraine /only/ replaced a transistor on the board. They did not touch the firmware at all, it is still the same FW 1507 and all the configuration and personalization etc. that I had previously when the bug was occuring. All they did was a soldering operation. So OBVIOUSLY we are talking about a hardware but here that no firmware update would be able to fix in full.
To everybody who is affected by rebooting / hard lockups / freezing when 3G (HDSPA) is enabled:
Please stop asking your dealers, Nokia or whomever for replacement devices. This is a pointless exercise. My theory is that there are either some production lines left that are still producing faulty devices as of today, or at least there are still large stocks of faulty devices being sold / used as replacement devices.
Your only way out of this bug is to have your current device repaired.
You need to take in or send in your device to Nokia Care, you need to attach a printout of this URL:
And you need to make a very clear statement that you have this specific bug and that you want this specific bug repaired for your device.
That's all you need to say, do not say anthing else to prevent them from chasing dead ends. You do not need firmware updates, full diagnostics, replacement devices, whatever. You just need a bit of soldering done on your PCB.
At this point in time, I can say that after the reapir my phone behaves much better than before. It is premature to say that the problem is solved, maybe the transistor is prone to wear out quickly again or something. I will get back here in a couple of weeks to let you know if the repair really fully fixed my problem in the long run. But I want to believe that this is the case.
Best regards,
Tobias

Tobias thanks for your feedback!
The problem here in the US is that they keep sending back replacments, and like you said, that doesn't really fix the issue..
I doubt that they can replace the transistor/capacitor themselves, or.. I doubt that they even know about it, or have spares for that matter.

The problem I see here (UK) is that a lot of phones are Malaysian grey imports which Nokia Care won't touch.
That includes phones sold by amazon.co.uk on the Amazon URL which is pointed to by nokia.co.uk's Buy option!
Specifically Tech Trading and Barl Trading is what you get if you go to Nokia.co.uk and click on Buy.
So Nokia UK are encouraging people to buy grey imports ![]()
The "fix" is to disable HSPA while leaving 3G enabled. Doesn't that reduce the mobile data speed to about 384kbits/sec?

I wonder what phone S/N onwards this was fixed?

This blog
http://mynokiablog.com/2013/01/02/firmware-update-
suggests that update 1508, which came out a few days ago, fixed the HSPA bug for the writer.
It would be interesting if anybody can confirm that.

One UK online retailer, selling the Malaysian imports like they all seem to, says they have sold hundreds in the past few months and nobody has reported this issue.
It's worth getting this fixed before buying the 808. I have just measured the speed of loading of 3G versus HSPA, for one fairly "big" website, and it was 45 secs versus 7 secs. So this is not just a trivial thing.
