Reading between the lines, all that the Car Mode app is is an app launcher, with big buttons! It doesn't seem to do anything else.

Yes; that's exactly what it does. But it isn't needed, and I have to terminate it each time I get in the car and start up the engine. My N700 (firmware 1506) doesn't have this issue; it just works quietly.
How can I stop Car Mode launching itself when the bluetooth connection starts?
Something strange has happened...
I decided to test the Nokia Suite backup, so I wiped the phone (using the *#xxxx# method) and restored the backup, and after spending hours sorting out the result (Nokia Suite, it turns out, DOES NOT RESTORE ANY APPS INSTALLED ON E: even though it does restore their configs, usually) I found the phone now pairs with the car bluetooth but without Car Mode popping up
Evidently the restore failed to restore something that was useless anyway, which is a good result..............
I never uninstalled Car Mode.
It just vanished all by itself.
Maybe it was an accessory which I accidentally installed along with some updates, and then restored a backup which was made before I had installed Car Mode.
A stupid piece of software...
The only sure way around this stuff is to flash the phone with custom firmware, which one is not allowed to talk about in this forum It's also a nontrivial process, which involves significant competence. I did it on a 700 phone which has been well messed up and I wanted to sell it (I flashed the original factory firmware).
