Is anyone happy with the N97?

Is anyone happy with the N97?

All I've read so far is negative comments?

I had an issue with the C space after V20, but all sorted now.

So is no one happy?

I'm chuffed to bits, certainly don't regret upgrading from the N95 8GB.

Also, can anyone explain what Dual mode is for?

Re: Is anyone happy with the N97?

I had a minor blip in the first 10mins but was easily sorted and i am happy:smileyhappy:)

as for signal dual mode all i can find is it allows the handset to operate on both analog and digital networks. But apart from that i know as much as you :smileysad:

Re: Is anyone happy with the N97?

Now that SIP is working I feel I am closer to having a device that is a business tool, give me Skype and HTML email in the default mail client and I will be satisfied.  Yeah the N97 is OK here is my beef:

1. For the price I feel hooped - I bought a business device, yet the N97 does little more than the Express Music.  So why I paid $800 bucks for that i don't know.  I thought I bought something, and was delivered something else.

2. My N95 had more Business features that the N97 - at least SIP worked on the N95, as did Live Messenger which was FULLY integrated into the phone.  So the N97 had less in that regard.

3. until v20 there would be crashes answering calls etc - how can one conduct business with something that does that?  Or it would crash, and you would not notice for a few hours, thus missing calls.

4. Nothing to do with the phone per se, but Nokia's communication on the issues, updates etc has been atrocious.  So yeah, you've got a phone that barely works, lacks features, you're out $800 and nobody has anything to say about it.

5. The early days of the camera lens scratch, what to do, what to do?  At least Nokia will replace this now, this is the only thing they have admitted fault to - I have no customer care in Canada, they don't even list the n97 on nokia.ca - so I'll get my NEXT phone then send this one back to get fixed.  I assume that will take at least 1 month to get it back from repairs.

And that is my beef.  In short, I don't hate the N97 - it is just not the phone they advertised it as, nor do they seem that motivated to right the wrongs.  That makes me bitter.

Nuf said.

I am really very happy with my N97. I got it already in July with firmware 10 on it. When I received it, it was already reasonably fast but there were stability issues.

Now with v20, the phone is just really fast an comfortable to use. I use it daily lot for calendar, email, twitter, and web.

There are still a number of minor issues with it. One of which is that in a meeting I usually add notes to the appointment in calendar, but then must disable the alarm because otherwise I cannot save it. Another one is the phone keypad which does not show the letters.

The main issue remaining is battery life and I think it can be improved a lot. I did some measurements showing strange behavior and I really suspect that it is possible to solve these. See this thread here: /discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&message.id=175120#M175120

Unfortunately, there is a lot of Nokia bashing going on here which I do not understand. Don't let yourself be fooled by the negative contributions in this forum. It is a support forum so expect people with problems to go here (in effect selecting the subset of people that have problems from the total population of N97 users). There are in fact many satisfied N97 users of which I am one.

For instance, just look on the internet for reviews of Shimano bicycle chains. There you will get the impression that these are the worst chains in the world. However, they are also most sold in the world and therefore statistically break the most. Combining that with the fact that unsatisfied users are the most typical to do a review or go to a forum, the result is obvious.

Re: Is anyone happy with the N97?

If you don't have a 3g network in your area, you should go into settings>phone>network and change from "Dual" to "GSM." You'll save your battery life that way. If you keep it on Dual, the phone will constantly be searching for a 3G connection and weaken your battery faster. Hope this is helpful.

Re: Is anyone happy with the N97?

I had major problems with mine, when i say problems i mean i didn't like some of it rather than it having actual problems, i had real problems with my connections, i use the net heavy on my n97 with the widgets, constant packet connections, two maybe three web browsers open and constant email retrieval, now i was told by a nokia rep how to set up for heavy use about 2 months ago and its been shoddy but i thought it was the best it could do, today i i played with the settings and nailed it, stupid rep gave me the wrong setup and now with my settings its running 100% better :smileyhappy:

Erik - you've highlighted my point exactly:

'Now with v20, the phone is just really fast an comfortable to use. I use it daily lot for calendar, email, twitter, and web.'

you can do all that on an express music and would have saved ummm like $500.  For that matter you could do that on an n95, n96 or any phone...

And people really still Twitter? That is so February 2009... Lol

Re: Is anyone happy with the N97?

yup had only minor glitches from new, just updated to V 20 FW today and it seems stable. Use mine for all the usual multimedia stuff, plus internet and videos, very clear on telephone calls.

Have not tried synching calander yet, email works no problem prefer the Opera Mini browswer to the one that comes with it. Overall, am very pleased, much prefer it to my N95 8gig.

I'm curious as to what functions people expect from a business telephone? Apart from the push email on Blackberry I can't think of anything else i'd want to use a telephone for given the size of the keys and screen? Anybody tell me please what I'm missing - I'll maybe look for it on my next one!?

Re: Is anyone happy with the N97?

After the Update I Feel Neutral .. Sometimes Im super happy when its working fine & sometimes I feel numb about it , my only Confirmed disappointment is the Camera & its options , Camera is kinda important to me .. but afterall it's a good device , surely not worth the 600$+ ... maybe later updates will make it worth it ... Doubt it , no device is flawless really in every aspect  .. no such thing as a Perfect Super phone .. wherever theres software theres a Bug & Glitch .. the Main concern about the N97 was Hardware issues as well .. & thts why its not worth the Big $$ .. in the end Am I Happy ? .. Im just Happy the Update was good sofar .
N97 .. Working or Not , it's still a *bleeing* Rip OFF .

It is also a replacement for my camera. i also use the keyboard a lot. And storing all my music on it s also nice. it s also interesting to see that i did all of these things on my old  Palm Treo 650, and SE P990i as well, even Before that with my Tungsten T and Nokia 6310. The N97 just does it better. Tt is the first phone to replace my camera.
To me the N97 is evolution, not revolution.

Re: Is anyone happy with the N97?

Most people who are happy with their phones won't bother with the forums so the veiws do tend to be biased towards the negative.

I have always been happy with my N97 and after v20 loving it.

It is a good phone.

'Most people who are happy with their phones won't bother with the forum'

- Umm and where did you get that info from?  As a BWM owner I can tell you that on the Forums everyone loves their car and yeah we spend a TON of time on the forums - mainly to get the most out of our cars.

Back to phones - Apple forums are some of the most active, and the fanboys love their iHogs.  The probs we've all got are well evident and well - really whats there to talk about with the N97 - nobodys making apps, and Nokia is working a snails pace to rectify their wrongs.  With the N97 there really is not much to share in regards to tweaks and the like.  The only reason I got on here last week was to figure out how to hack the SIP.

So I call BS on your 'Most People' comment.

The problem with generalizations, is they are generally wrong.

Re: Is anyone happy with the N97?

N97 - promises a lot but offers very little.

No office doc reading software unless you buy the software extra?

Glitches galore, with annoying things that just takes way too much time... such as I have only ever sent 20 sms's according to the Menu heading but inside there are many more than that and the number never changes after sending another!

Now I have a Mass Memory Error, which looks like a failure.  Very annoying and I guess another fight is coming up between the Carrier and Nokia?  Can not even plug into the PC and the Mass Memory is failing... can not run any checks on it all!

Not as fast as I thought either and some screens take way too long to load.

Why is voice dialling so ineffective too... when you use it you get all of these names and applications that are not even close to the name stored... and yes I can re-record them but that makes no difference and with a long list of contacts you just don't have time?

Running a business on this phone is very limited.

I also agree with the comment that these forums will draw negative comments, because people will always look for an easy fix to their problems.

Yep that's been my experience..  Did you see Nokia (Symbian's) response to the dead turn out at some Symbian developers conference?  They just fobbed it off again as "competition, not a threat", does Nokia have its head up its ... ?

I'm currently looking at Samsung..  or anything.. but Nokia..  Man that ship's going down, market share sinking like a stone.

It's the attitude that gets me, you just get nothing out of Nokia, ever.

Lets see if any Nokia reps bother to respond on this forum (or just delete posts) - both of which will confirm why I should ditch Nokia as with all my family and friends who follow my advice.

Go check out Whirlpool - they're being slammed.
