Also, for people whose phones haven't yet failed, I'd say we currently need three things:
1. What is actually wrong with the N8?
2. Is the problem due to be fixed in software or it's decidedly a hardware flaw?
3. Is there any way to know whether our phone is bound to fail anytime soon? (ie, serial numbers batch, etc) It's not good to live your life in fear that your USD 550 phone may turn up dead any day.

Thanks to Vandaley for a URL to Mr. Savander's interview - I guess majority of affected users have seen that already.
Message is nice and promising, but real life situation appears to be quite different, at least here in Poland.
Nokia Care are unaware, Nokia Poland either - so how can I trust they act in line with Mr. Savander's declarations ?
If Mr. Savander claims this is the whole batch of faulty phones, then I assume Nokia must know affected IMEI range.
Like other manufacturers do, Nokia should publish affected range.
Advantage #1 - no need for "inspection" - things will be clear (Nokia to save on "inspection" costs :-) )
Advantage #2 - those whose N8 are still alive (but supposed die soon) will also know - Nokia can react in advance, thus preventing from further repuation loss
If the phone's IMEI is from affected range, replacement should be done within 24-48 hours.
Nokia can take faulty phones back, and then refurbish - regardless how long it takes.
I do not see any reason to be offered a repair and waiting weeks for my phone back.
Problem caused by Nokia's manufacturing line issues should be Nokia's problem, not mine - unless I am wrong to think so.
This is how I believe this should be done - if Nokia cares.
Unless there is anything not yet revealed, of course - which I now suspect is the case.
regards,
WK

Judging by the absence of due reaction from Nokia so far (I decidedly count out Mr. Savander's speech as in fact almost nothing certain has been said by him) the flaw looks technological.
Hence, in any country any phone that was produced at least before November, 15 or so may go disfunctional at any moment whenever temperature rises for any reason outside or/and inside the unit. Am I right, Nokia guys?
BTW after 14 months of normal everyday use crome garment went off my unhappy N97 to complete the story......

It's not so simple tho as it appears the specific issue affects a limited number of handsets within the first batches
not every handset in the first batches will exhibit the issue, most should be fine
for those that do a care point should be able to fix it in a short space of time

Hi!
I have the same problem with my Nokia N8 (bought one week ago) - it switches off by itself sporadically and afterwards it´s temporarily impossible to switch it on again / no reaction on charing. In my opinion this problem appears especially through differences in temperature (warm flat->cold wet streets->warm office).
Today I have given my N8 in repair.
My Location: Germany
best regards
David

My N8 has the "Die"-Problem and since 3,5 weeks (!) for repar at NCC in Switzerland.
After several requests to estimate the time for repare, I got today an official response from NokiaCare, that this time cannot be estimated. From this I assume, that the problem is much more serious than NOKIA do recognize or the problem is just still NOT SOLVED!
I am not willing to wait any longer! Nokia react! Give me a new pone or my money back!

Songoku, I'm sorry to hear that it's taking so long. I would advise you to call Nokia Care in Switzerland (http://www.nokia.ch/support/kontakt) and ask to make a complaint about your repair experience.

Elder Murtazin has a well publicised beef with nokia
I'd take anything he says with a serious pinch of salt

After getting my handset repaired by ncc twice, I sold that handset now, and I will NEVER EVER look back to N8. I hate the fact that after purchasing the phone, I faced issues from the first day and after two weeks of waiting for my device, it again caused issues like hangs ![]()
I was die hard fan of symbian, but not anymore. Nokia was a trust brand just because of quality etc but the fact actually gets changed when they released Nokia N8.
I am fedup and give up.Looking for other brand now.

What you will find is these are primarily user to user support forums
whilst nokia reps occasionaly post here, it's not guarenteed,
the mods are just here to ensure that you don't post personal information, or anything that is not acceptable
If you have an issue with your phone, see either the retailer that sold it to you or a nokia care point,
if you have a specific issue with nokia then use the contact us link above

Is it possible to rectify the discussed error in the faulty N8 units through a repair?? I mean, at the local Nokia Care Center by local engineers...
I doubt because the first thing they say is, the problem is software related.
