Oh, my! Then it's (probably) a severe hardware problem... Nokiagate coming straight after the Applegate (the iPhone antenna issue)?
Once Nokia avoided a "N86gate": N86 speaker was losing volume and even going off suddenly during conversation because of poor contacts/mounting problem. I had that phone and the speaker problem, just like many other users all over the world - as this phorum hinted.
So, why Nokiagate is avoidable everytime it arises? Nokia has been so wise in floating many models simultaneously. You can hide away almost any problem of one particular model when you produce 100 at a time. And iPhone, being a revolutionary solution, stands alone naked to the eyes... Poor thing! ![]()
Nokia usually resolves its problems by floating an "improved" model (like N97mini after N97), or updating - sooooo slowly - firmware at best. I think it is not fair, because a dissapointed user rarely gets due compensation in such case. This is why it will inevitably lose its market share over time!

Looks like random N8 deaths are not rare... Nokia, if you are listening, please step up and do something about the hardware quality control issues.. Recall batches if you have to.. Please don't let your loyal users down

Same problem again for my N8 in the UK recently bought from Orange. After about 2 weeks of working well the phone died in the middle of a phone call. Left it overnight and it switched on again but only lasted about 6 hours before the same thing happened again.
From a suggestion elsewhere in this thread, I put it in the fridge for about 20mins and it started working again! Not a long term solution as I want a proper working phone!
Orange said they would replace it but they have none in stock at the moment so I may try the Nokia Care Centre.

This worked for me too, which makes me think that a switch that prevents overheating is being tripped too early. Nokia should seriously check out the batch, but they probably need some serial numbers to see if it's related to a batch.

I can't say that I find putting my handset in the freezer very appealing...
I bought my N8 on Saturday. Worked wonderfully for two days. Monday morning I synced to Ovi for the first time and by the time I got to work it was black screen and wouldn't turn on. Tried all the more conventional fixes then sent it back to the shop I bought it from. I'm in rural Indonesia so they sent it into the closest city to either fix it or replace it. Sounds like I am in for the long haul.
On the flip side, I was having a blast for the first two days.
Works out to be about $10/hour of fun.

Are any of the Finland made N8s going dead?
So far it looks like more of the ones coming out of the China facility are having problems. Mine was made in china.. It's just mind boggling to see such an expensive phone just sitting there completely dead....

I'm betting it's the battery.
EDIT: Meaning that the defective phone doesn't have to be made in China, the batteries might be made elsewhere from the phone.

Hi I am in England UK. I got my N8 on Wednesday last week, on the Thursday I had a blank white screen! Altho I bought it online I took it to a shop and they gave up trying to make it work and replaced it. Now 4 Days later the new one is totally dead! It is charged but I cannot switch it on anymore. The store phone number is constantly busy, now I will have to travel 7 miles to take it back. I know that they will NOT replace it as it states in the contract that they will only make ONE exchange!! I am worried about how long I will have to wait for them to send it away to be repaired!!! Pity, I like the phone but there is no way I can recommend it to friends or colleagues now! Like most people I need my phone for work.....NOT HAPPY

Hi all! I'm from Belgium and had the total "lockup/can't turn of or charge" problem with 2 n8's. Both of them where made in the big "FINLAND". home of nokia. the same **bleep** as everything else so it seems.
Both brand new out of the box. The first 1 locked up after 1 day. the second just made it out of the box and locked up on me after the first boot. I'm getting another new one in a couple of houres. putting it in the freezer just to make it boot????? come on guys!!! its just not done okay! maybe it works but its not something you should be doing with an 500€ costing phone just so you could make a call that last longer than 5 minutes and then hangs again!! wake up nokia!! i thougt my n97 was bad! but this?? its just a freaking joke!!!! listen to all the complaints and get to work!!!

I live in Switzerland, and have bought the N8 on 19. Oct. in Zürich.
The device is "Made in Finland".
It has the same Bug: "Freeze-> Switch off-> can't turn on and can't charging".
Well, after a while you could switch it on again, but it was dead very soon again.
After one week of use I had a crash 10 times per day. Alwayes during the using of it.
It is since 1,5 weeks in repare at Nokia Care Center. The status is: "wating for spare parts".
It's a shame, that Nokia sell N8 with this high rate of defect devices!
I have the feeling, that Nokia will be in a big trouble very soon!
But silence and no communication is the wrong way.
Hurry up with fixing the problem Nokia. I did sell my Nokia-Shares allready. The others will follow soon...

I had the same problems. I returned the phone and got another and it runs really well. If you get a good one then its a great phone.

I had this problem yesterday. During a call the phone freezed and went black. I couln't turn it off, restart or charge it. Tried hard reset (4 button combination) .. nothing worked. After 10 minutes it responded with a white flash screen ... and then i could boot it again.
Nokia : what is going on ? Please fix / do some press release.

I've been proud owner of nokia for years now,but i think N8 is a big disappointment
bought it last month and it worked fine for like week or two.One day while clicking a pic the fone got hanged with continuous sound of ringing tone . It miraculously started that day ![]()
But yesterday it went blank and the screen never came back alive. Took it to Nokia Care they asked me to wait there for like half an hour, the time needed for rectification of the product read-Software Updation- (and i thought Wow! when did they become so quick and fast with their services) .....But finally they asked for the phone to be sent to their workshop as there seems to be some major hardware issue....One week id be without my fone which is pretty bad
Still Hoping they replace the machine and dont just repair it ![]()
