Hi guys,

I require some help please.

When I first got my N8-00 I had no problems at all, until 6 months later I dropped it from a height of 2ft. Then I got all the problems, automatically turning off and restarting 100 times a day etc, etc. I took it to my phone supplier who replaced it with a new one, that had the new Anna software installed. Since then whenever I get or make calls the screen goes totally blank. It is really annoying as I cannot see who is calling or if the call has gone through. I have to manually unlock the phone to attend the call. Also having problems answering the calls as sometimes I have to press the answer button 3-4 times. Finally now 3 months after having this phone it has started turning off and restarting automatically, but thankfully only about once a week.......so far. I have all the latest Anna updates but these problems still persist. Should I go back to my supplier and hand it back? They would just give me another N8, probably a refurb.

If anyone can help me with advice regarding this situation it would be really appreciated.

Hey Gstarcooked, Welcome to the Nokia Forums!

Your N8 proximity sensor could be over sensitive and this will cause your phone to have a black screen, during incoming and outgoing calls aswell as alarms.

First thing is try to verify sunlight/IR oversensitivity with a typical desk lamp.

This could be done by making a phone call (or setting alarm) and putting the phone under the desk lamp when the phone is ringing (or alarm activated).

If phone is oversensitive to IR, display should go blank caused by IR radiation from desk lamp.

If this is the case you should take your phone to your Local Nokia Care Point, and they will be able to fix it for you!

I hope this helps, let me know if your phone goes black screen during an incoming calls when you test it under the lamp!

Desklamp or no desklamp still getting a black screen.

Do you have something covering the proximity sensor such as a clear screen protector or case? If so remove those and see if it functions normally.

If like Psychomania said you have nothing covering your proximity sensor, Im afraid that means your proximity sensor is broken and you will have to take your device to a Nokia Care point then where they can analyse your phone and fix your device.

I hope you manage to get your phone fixed.

Hey guys

Yes I did have a clear screen protecter.  I have taken it off but it has not made a difference.

I am going to take it to my local Nokia care point. Will report back once I have been there.

Okay, so I took my phone back to my phone supplier, who took it in for repair.

Got a phone call from a tech guy saying my phone was not in need of any mechanical repair but did need a software update. The guy said he does not guarantee that the software update will fix the problem but it was all he can do!!!!

I had made sure that I had all the latest ANNA software updates before reporting the problem to my phone supplier and told the tech this. He replied that there are issue's with the N8 and was limited as to what he could do as it is a known software problem that Nokia are aware of.

My very first phone was not a nokia but of a rival company. ALL phones since have been nokia (5 in total). I had N73, N95 and a couple of others before them whose models numbers evade me at this moment in time. But I am very upset with Nokia for letting me down with this phone. I am used to a very high standard from Nokia but they have tarnished thier own name by releasing this phone, knowing that there were problems with it. I am beginning to lose faith in nokia and may have to go to thier rivals for a decent phone.

Rant over. I think the best thing I can do for my own sanity is to exchange the N8 for a different phone. Shame on you Nokia. You have just lost a very loyal customer.

I'm finding this hard to believe that this was a genuine Nokia Care centre that gave you this information. 

If a Nokia Care Point cannot fix your handset for you, they will always offer to forward it on for repair and will not simply give you a faulty phone back. 

As for known issues: ALL manufacturers have to design, produce and release handsets incredibly fast to keep up with the market. All operating systems will have regular updates that cure faults as they are discovered. This does not mean the design is flawed, it just means you have had a bit of bad luck and are stuck with a wrong-un. 

My best advice to you is to forget your retailer and give Nokia Care a call direct. Tell them the trouble and the service you have recieved and they can direct you to the best place. I'm going to assume you are in the UK, so the number you need is 0845 045 5555.

If you are not in the UK, I'm sure some of the international community can direct you to the correct number.

Hi there,

I do understand that companies have to release phones quickly and that there might be some "teething problems" that may arise. I know, understand and can appreciate this. But the number of problems it has given not just me but more than half the people who have one, is ridiculous. My brother-in-law had an N8 before I did and had warned me not to get one (The problems he had are way more than I had) but being a loyal Nokia customer I went ahead and got one.

Just to let you know that the software update has fixed the problem, for now, but again has changed the look of the phone, everything is different.....until the next update when everything will change again!!

Obviousle it is not a sensor probleme because if you put your hand over and out, the screen luminosity will change.

I have this issue since Anna,s update. In Canada, this update appear in november or at the begening of december if I remember well. I was surprise of how this new update was nice. I personally love this N8 but with all of those knowed issue make this phone annoying to use.

Next time I will look for a smartphone, I will make sure to investigate what issue X phone have and buy the phone instead of getting a 3 years contract. (december 2012 I will trow away this N8 if this issue is not fixed and make a video on youtube on how to fix the N8 issue).

I will still trix to find a way to fix this issue even if I have to hack it.

I hope Nokia will not let us down.

Do not mistake proximity sensor with light sensor. Proximity sensor is between light sensor and 'Nokia' logo and is barely visible.

Please help......I have just received my new Nokia lumina 900 and if I try and make a phone call or retrieve messages from voicemail the screen goes blank, I can,t use the key pad or hang up or anything, it's just blank. I've tried turning the phone off and othersuggestions that I've seen, doesnt help.

i have symbian belle (111.040.1511) there is a sensor problem when i am at open place where sun light will come directly at that time there is no display at the time of calling or incoming call and also i am unable to attend or decline any call because there is no display due to sensor and normally when i am at normal light places like home it works properly...so kindly give suggestion to resolve this problem....

I had a Nokia x7-00 with the exact same problems, with Symbian Anna, I got random freezes and restarts all the time, I updated to Belle,the restarts and freezes stopped but after 3 weeks, the screen went black whenever alarm rings, incoming calls, outgoing calls, etc.

My problem with the black screen was a circuit error for the proximity sensor, had to squeeze the upper left/right edge of the phone and the screen came alive again for as long as I squished the corner tightly, when i let go, the screen went black again.

Easy to find out, if this works for your phones. this problem is hardware related.
