Yes, it works and this is how you do it if you have a Nokia N8 with a Scandinavian language:

1. Trykk på Meny-knappen nede i venstre hjørne på telefonen.
2. Trykk på Meldinger-ikonet.
3. Trykk på Valg nede i venstre hjørnet 
3. Trykk på SIM-meldinger
4. Slett alle beksjedene manuelt med å hake av boksene ved siden av meldingene.
5. Trykk på Valg og Slett alle meldinger.

It looks like it helped a lot o people. Maybe I am silly but I can no find SIM messages on my N8. I go to Messages>options>and there is nothing regarding SIM, please help me, this flashing envelope is driving me crazy

Messages > Options > Show Folders > Options > SIM messages

there is settings but no options

i have been having the same problem with my n8 since i got it yesturday,,,THANKYOU so much for your answer i was really startin to get **bleep** with it as i tryed everything, BUT that...lol.....i read your answer to the other persons comment and im glad i looked it up now!!....THANKS!!!!
