I would need to get an alert when new emails arrive on my N97. I have tried to set the email programme to Automatic Retrieval > E-mail notifications/Auto-update - but even if I leave the email programme running, I don't get any notifications.
What is wrong?

does your phone shows net connected symbol at signal strength indicator?
normally when you exit from messaging after reading mails, it disconnects your net connection, in order to keep the phone connected to net press menu button in messaging and go to home screen, in background your messaging application will be running.

On my N97 I don't have any option "Data Call". The only options under Settings -> Connectivity -> Admin Settings are the following:
Net settings
Packet data
Presence
SIP settings
XDM profile
APN control
Under Packet data connection there are only two options: When available, and When needed. I have activated When needed.

Messaging>Settings>Automatic retrieval>E-mail notifications===> Disabled
Messaging>Settings>Automatic retrieval>E-mail retrieval===> Enabled
Retrieval hours===> Select your choice
Retrieval interval===> Set to 5 min
Now send a test mail and check after ten minutes have you got a mail indications?

Sorry - I don't have these settings on my N97. Under Messaging > Settings I have only these options:
Text message
Multimedia message
Sync e-mail
Service message
Operator message
Other
In none of these is there any option for retrieving messages.
But if I go to the email account that I want to retrive messages from, there is the option Automatic retrieval under E-mail settings. I have activated the option E-mail notifications > Auto-update. But as I said, it does not work for me. I did not want to retrieve the whole email automatically (i.e. the option E-mail retrieval > Enabled), as that would mean automatic dowmload of a whole lot of unnecessary data (and the system gives the warnng that it wouold incur extra costs).
However, I just tested you suggestion - but the email is not retrieved automatically at all. I have to go to Messaging and say Yes to the question "Last connection to mailbox at 2:44 pm. Connect again now?"
This is not automatci retrieval.

I'm just curious, first you say you need to get an alert when you get an email then you say you don't want to automatically retrieve your emails because its gonna use whole lot of data. You can't pick and choose here
either have it retrieve them automatically or you do it whenever you want manually.
By the way If you go in retrieval stings, it says header only, its not going to be that bad even if you want to retrieve all your new emails, the email headers are not that big anyways, besides, If you buy this phone you gotta have unlimited data plan, Its like getting Iphone with limited data plan and yes I know, its mandatory to get data plan with Iphone, I'm just saying ![]()

What I need is an alert (e.g. the same type as when an SMS arrves), but I don't want the complete text of all emails to be downloaded automatically; I want to choose which ones I wish to read. But I now realize that, as you say, only the headers are downloaded if I don't choose otherwise.
This seems to work - but what I need is an alert, and this option does not give any alerts. And the option Automatic retrieval > E-mail notifications does not work - nothing is retrieved and no alerts are given..
(Btw, I don't have any limitations on downloading data.)

Message>Your Mailbox>open it>you will see option at bottom left>Click>E-Mail Settings>Retrieval settings>opt for headers only.
The above option is to avoid downloading unnecessary e-mails which you do not want download.
Message>Your Mailbox>open it>you will see option at bottom left>Click>E-Mail Settings>Automatic Retrieval> E-mail notifications> make it disabled
Message>Your Mailbox>open it>you will see option at bottom left>Click>E-Mail Settings>Automatic Retrieval> E-mail retrieval>make it enabled.
Now you will get three option as below
Retrieval days
Retrieval hours
Retrieval interval
set all above as i mentioned in previous post.
Now go back to your mailbox in phone connect manually once you get your mails, mark all them as read, and press Menu button from there.
After 5 minutes it will connect it self to your server retrieve mails and it will disconnect the connection.
It is working for me, i do get e-mail alert like message alert every hour(because i set for one hour) and if i wish i can download whole message if i do not wish to download i simply mark it as read.

Thank you for your help, but this does not work for me.
I have changed my settings exactly as you say, but I'm still not getting any alert. I have to open the messaging programme to see if any mail has arrived, and then it is no improvement compared to the standard settings.
Is there a specific setting for defining an alert?

You can check in your active profile that the E-Mail alert tone is set correctly.

Let me go through it again.
Considering you have one mailbox which you need automatic notification.
1. Start your messaging create a mailbox, let us consider the name of that mailbox as NOKIA
2. In home screen put e-mail widget and set that widget to NOKIA
3. Now repeat all the steps which i have explained you.
Menu>Messaging>NOKIA>Open>Options>E-mail settings>Incoming e-mail>Open>Access point in use>set to your access point(which can connect without manual interface like password or search etc.,)>Security>Set to Off>APOP secure login>Set to OFF
Go back to settings
User Settings>New e-mail alerts>Set it to On
Retrieval settings>E-mail retrieval>Set it to Headers only
Automatic Retrieval>Email notifications>Set it to Disbled
E-mail retrieval>Set it to Enabled
Retrieval days>Set it to all days
Retrieval hours>Set it to all day
Retrieval interval>Every 5 minutes.
After doing all these restart your phone. Let it settle on it's own leave for few minutes.
Now go to NOKIA>Connect Manually>After gettings headers(that means subject line of your mail)>press Menu button and be in home screen.
Now after 5 minutes it must connect to your server and will retrieve mails(if there are any)
Dude, let me know if it worked or not. If not then you need to go to Nokia Care because i started fresh and did all the above settings and now i am getting the mails.
I do not know how to take screen shots of phone or else i would have posted the images.
