Did you use the screen protector? The 700 has a sensor that deactivate the touchscreen when making/receiving the call.

As mentioned, the proximity sensor (it looks kinda like a wee camera at the top of the screen) might be being obstructed. It's used to turn the screen (and screen input) off when the phone is next to your head.

Thank you for the suggestions, but no screen protector has been applied. The sensors are not blocked. Problem was apparent with first call right out of the box. Noticed another post about this as well as same issue with N8 and other handsets.
Screen goes black immediately upon pressing "send" when making a call. Phone does not have to be anywhere near the face. Calls can be completed holding handset to ear but screen is not accessible to activate loudspeaker or perform any other multitasking until call is completed.
Issue also occurs when an alarm or reminder goes off. Screen is black and inaccessible. Otherwise performs normally.
Updated software via Nokia Suite to version 111.030.0609 but issue persists. Will have to send brand new handset in for repair by Nokia, it appears.
