Hi all.
My new 808 is fantastic!
However when the display is viewed at an angle of about 20 degrees or more the whites shown become blue.
This is more evident when I look at Google homepage because of the white background.
This is very annoying. Is this a defect in my device display?
Thanks in advance for reply,
Pasha

Hi Pasha,
What you are seeing is a side effect of using a pentile AMOLED display you will see a similar effect on the N9 and Nokia Lumia 800 for instance. This is normal for this type of display so there is nothing wrong with your Nokia 808.
Hope this helps,
Kosh

Hi Kosh,
Thanks for reply.
Just to add information, albeit subjective, I can confirm that my blueish tint is stronger on my device than on other 808 and Lumia 900 I have seen and it does not happen on my C7. I guessed that a pale blue tint is normal while a strong one might be an anomaly. Maybe a visual check with Nokia Support (repair services) might clarify. What do you think?
Best Regards

Hi Pasha,
The Lumia 900 and Nokia C7 both do not have an AMOLED (pentile) display so these will not show this effect. If you are in doubt you can always contact a Nokia Care Point, but from what you describe it sounds like it's the effect from the display type.
Let us know how you get on,
Kosh

Just to re-iterate the point made by Kosh. If I tilt the display of my N8 the colour changes from white to pale purple. This is normal for AMOLED screens. The same was true for my Galaxy S (RIP) but viewing the screen at a normal angle didn't reveal any purple or blue tints.

Hi Kosh,
Thanks again for highlighting display differences. That makes any comparison with C7 pointless. ![]()
I will investigate with Nokia Care guys and give feedback because the Blue Tint I get is more similar to
Nokia Logo background than a faint pale blue and because I saw other 808s on display at Nokia Store with
a less strong blue. When I look at the perpendicular angle whites are whites and the display works fine...
And forgot to tell that I got incredibile pictures with this wonder!
Best Regards

Thanks Ray,
So it's the kind of Amoled that count. It seems Lumia 900 AMOLED is the RGB kind and no pentile, hence the difference. Lumia 800 has pentile so I can check with a friend of mine who got one on my suggestion (and we're still friends.. ;-) )

Hi Kosh,
I have left my 808 to the Nokia Store that will send it to Nokia Care Point.
Nokia Store has aknowledged that there is a visible difference between my device and some new / testing devices in the shop.
I'll keep you informed.
Best Regards,
Pasha

Phone Arena states that the 808 has an RGB display, not a pentile display. Others are saying it is pentile. Anyone in the know have the correct answer?
Here is the quote from their article comparing a Samsung device to the 808:
"The 360x640 resolution typical for Nokia Belle handsets makes for a lousy pixel density on this size, whereas the 720x1280 pixels on the Galaxy S III make for crisp and distinct imagery, regardless of the PenTile pixel matrix used compared to the regular RGB on the 808 PureView."
I bring this up because some are suggesting the blue tint, in general, is a pentile artifact. Knowing the underlying architecture of the display would go a long way to shedding some light on that suggestion.

I assume the display manufacturing has certain degree of acceptable technological deviation, which probably for Nokia is a bit lax. My N8 shows correct colors at any angle, but a N8 of a friend has a reddish tint at almost any angle except perpendicular view. Same carrier branding, same product code, same dark gray case. I think I was just lucky, whereas he was just unlucky. I wish Nokia engineers at the factory to be more rigorous with the quality treshold.

My 808 came back from Nokia Care with a new display and a new battery. All works as it should have been now.
Although this brings some relief to me, I had to wait 21 days for repair and while the phone was ready after 2 weeks it was the battery which came late. It looks like Nokia has produced very little stock of batterIes. That is worrisome for the future.
