I don't see why everyone says that the update for Ovi Maps so you can use the SatNav feature for free isn't available for the normal N97.
I have a normal N97 and it works fine on mine with voice guidance, just like a normal satnav.

My girlfriend, family and me have been fans of Nokia for years but after buying N97 we felt like we have been betrayed. The phone just doesn't deliver. My girlfriend crashed hers out of frustration and I bought her iphone 3G S. She adores it.
Some people say updates will fix all the issues, but I say no.Update can't fix its tiny RAM and its slow processor which obviously don't handle its huge 32GB.
I read things like "iphone was sh** when it was released". mMm okay, does Nokia releases buggy phones into the market becase they think there are other buggy phones out there in the market anyway?
Others say N95 was buggy when it was released.....mmm huh folks......stop this nonsense. Now it gonna be stable after 2 or more years and some people don't even use their phones for 1.5 yrs. What a joke!
No more nokias .....Disappointed.

Let me add a few words. I'm sorry to agree: N97 is the worst phone I've ever had at least as far as Nokia is concerned. This is my 5th or 6th Nokia phone and after having it for half a year a think it's an immense disappointment. There are two reasons for that: the hardware and the system. Both are not up to the task.
I've experienced so many problems that I'm not able to list them all here. Let me just mention a few.
1. Definitely the most annoying one is erasing individualised ringtones and preferred phone numbers from the contacts. It happens every few days or even few hours without any visible reason. You have to reenter everything by hand which is very time-consuming.
2. Slow reactions of the interface. Sometimes it takes 10 seconds or more to enter a new sms mode.
3. It happened a couple of times that the pictures I'd just taken were not saved to the memory. They just disappeared.
4. Spontaneous system crashes, sometimes a couple of times a day.
5. Problems with bluetooth. It gets suddenly disconnected and when you use voice dialing with a bluetooth handset, you almost never hear the tone after which you're supposed to say the name. The bluetooth connection seems somehow 'delayed" and you never know when to start pronouncing the name.
These are only the most important failures but even those are enough to be furious with this phone. I think Nokia should be seriously ashamed with its 'flagship" product. It should have a 'beta' sign on the front.

Long live Nokia.
Keep up the good work Nokia

You know what I don't get?!
That Nokia and everyone keeps saying, N95 was also buggy, but look how it is fixed now!
What the hell?! If your phone is buggy and takes 6 months of firmware updates to fix it, then DONT RELEASE IT!!! Don't you guys have quality control?!
Look at all the other phones on the market! How many of them ever have a problem?
Fix your phones, or you will lose customers FAST!

+1 for you.
Agreed and the one thing that everybody forgets when they use the N95 argument is that the hardware specs for the N95 were pretty good at release leaving room for improvement, the N97 however has hardware that is three years old and no room for improvement. It's almost like Nokia had all of the components lying around in a warehouse spare and decided to use these rather than actually make design choices for hardware that met the needs of the device.

I have done everything I should do to increase my RAM...i.e. Move all apps over to E:, move my message storage to E:, deleted the welcome video and moved the MfE file over to E:, deleted my emails (I think properly)...cleared all privacy data on my browser...and yet my Ram stands at 12Mb.
Is there anything I can do to increase this?! Or will I have to do a reset? Can I do a reset which just deals with my C: and not my E: ?
What will I have to do after its reset?
Why such small RAM? ![]()

Agreed, after 6 months and the v21 firmware the N97 is still not the device that Nokia marketed. It's just OK but still has plenty of bugs, a poor UI, slow and laggy performance, and lacks major features like the promised integrated Skype.
At some point they have to admit this and resolve the problem through either a recall or some type of exchange program.

I agree with the most problem listed in this thread, and I personally uses a N97 Mini.
Now comes the interesting question.
WHY would they release the N97 Mini, if the original N97 isn't fixed?
They DO KNOW that hardware problems and software problems carries across right?
*sigh* still disappointed... but I am going to give the phone 6 month to fix it self!
I still have hope, but it's growing thin!

Hi folks, I've just made a terrible mistake. I bought a N97. My first Nokia (and my last). I bought the phone on Nokia's reputation for building quality stuff. I've had a few gremlins. I updated to the latest firmware, but no luck (it's actually gone worse).
Random crashes.
Merged screens (top half doesn't match bottom half).
Blank screens with no way of getting out.
No sync with Mac OS-X.
Nokia have done a Toyota and need to recall this phone NOW.
I will be taking advantage of the 14-day cooling off period and sending this very expensive paper weight back.

They released the mini to save face with the N97 - it was their way of addressing the HW issues with the N97 without admitting that the N97 did not have enough NAND memory - there could not have released the n97-2 without so quickly or everyone would have cried foul and returned for a refund. Only once you admit there is a problem do you run into trouble.
So in short there are 2 **bleep** phones, the mini was a dirty trick - however by theory the mini should be better as it is not subject to the problems that the n97 has.

...however by theory the mini should be better as it is not subject to the problems that the n97 has.
In terms of performance they only really addresses the lack of NAND memory problem, they didn't add more RAM and they didn't use a faster processor. So while N97 Mini owners may not have to worry about what apps they install on c: and the software problems caused by running out of space on the c: drive I imagine they still have the slow buggy performance issues caused by the lack of RAM and slow CPU.
It was a very cynical move on Nokia's part to release the Mini with extra NAND memory so quickly after the N97 and not address this issue on the N97. They must have known before release of the N97 that the lack of NAND memory would be a problem and if they had admitted this early on they could have redesigned the N97 either prior to release or shortly after. As it is now there are over two million N97s so they will never do a recall to fix this.
