I don't have an internet nor data plan, and was using my Ovi maps GPS, which I thought was free, and was later charged for 'internet data packet usage'. So now I'm not sure what is meant by 'free gps' ??

Postitioning all OFF bar GPS
Maps download to your phone

AGPS and network based GPS are used in weak signal areas and you have the choce of turning them on if needs be .

Hi, the guys above are correct, however if you are not familiar with the settings on your phone. Go to menu-Applications-Location-Positioning-Positioning Methods, this is where you 'untick' everything except 'Integrated GPS' which is free.
In the maps application after it starts there should be a spanner/wrench in the bottom left hand corner of the screen, if you tap this you get a settings screen ! Set internet to offline, and synchronisation to manual.
You also need to use Ovi suite or Nokia Map Loader to download the maps for your region to your phone as it will not navigate without the map data, and if it's not on the phone, Maps application will need to download it via the phones data connection to work.
Finally, as soon as it is economicallly possible , get a data plan, it will improve the overall user expeience of your phone.
Good Luck
