I don't know if this is the appropriate board for technical issues but here is the deal.
I have been having my N8 since it came out and I have been very pleased with it. There were some hiccups here and there but nothing too serious. A couple of months ago though my touch screen would stop responding and my phone would need a restart in order to function properly again. It didn't freeze, it just wouldn't respond to touch input. The physical keys worked fine and I was even able to open the task manager(albeit I couldn't shut down any application) or open the camera app. This would happen 2-3 times per week and a simple restart would always solve it.
However that wasn't the case yesterday. At some point during the night I woke up and decided to set my alarm because I had forgotten doing so earlier. At this point the very same problem that I describe above happened again. Not thinking much about it, I thought that a simple restart would solve it as per usual. That wasn't the case though. Even after restarting the phone the problem persisted. I then decided to try and hold the power button for 10s until the phone vibrated three times. To my surprise, it wasn't effective even thought whatever problem occured in the past would always be resolved that way.
Next up, I decided that I should try and back up the phone data, before trying anything else. Thankfully I didn't face any problem during the procedure and I was able to back up everything.
The next two things on my list were the 3 button hard reset and a firmware downgrade. None of these things proved to be effective.
I am thinking that this is related to faulty hardware, and more specifically faulty digitizer.
What are your thoughts about this issue?
Thanks a lot.

Problems not resolved with the hard reset are probably due to hardware. Might be time to pay the Nokia Care Point a visit. Not sure where you are or when you bought the phone but if you bought the phone in Europe, the warranty is 2 years.

I called dropped by a Nokia Care Point earlier this day. The technician there said that it sounded like my digitizer was faulty. I asked how much would it cost to replace it in which he answered 110 EUR.
From the little research I made only I found out that digitizers are quite cheap(around 10-20 EUR), and also they can be replaced quite easily at home.
To conclude, I am not doubting the technician. I just want a second opinion regarding my issue.
Another thing I would like to know is if it safe to replace the digitizer my self. Because I find it outrageous to pay +100EUR for something that costs 1/10 of that price.

Unfortunately it is against forum rules to discuss anything that involves disassembly of the phone. Even though your phone may no longer be under warranty, this post may result in others inadvertantly invalidating their warranties. All I can suggest here is the care point or try another unofficial forum. Hope you understand.
