It seems such a shame, that the once great frontrunner's in the telecommunications industry Nokia have now slid so far down the ladder its just improbable they can ever regain their strength. Nokia was once the go to company for all things for your mobile. Car accessories, etc etc. Now, its all APPLE, car manufacturer's actually build the Iphone/Ipod components into their vehicles, from Hyundai to BMW, its all Apple??? You go into a electrical store, clock radios, stereos everything, built around Apple. It is a crying shame, even the Android phones have now grown to a point where they are kicking sand into this once great company's face. If I was on the board of NOKIA, I would be asking some pretty serious questions off my marketing departments. Did they have their heads in the sand? Or did they thinks they could just sit back and rest on their laurels? How could NOKIA not see this coming and take steps to combat these threats? The Iphone is now part of our everyday vernacular, no one mentions anything else, and Android is not far behind.
COME ON NOKIA, TIME TO TAKE A BIG SPOONFUL OF CEMENT MIX, "AND HARDEN UP" START FIGHTING BACK!!!

Whilst I can echo some of your sentiments it is hard to see all perspectives of a truly global company, for example it is refreshing to see visibility of Nokia sponsorship in India. Who is to say that marketing vast numbers of low cost low profit units in emerging economy will not sustain company more in long run, than striving to sell smaller numbers of higher profit ones to a stagnant US and European economy in recession?
From a company perspective you never know what's around the corner, look at Sony's woes after result of double whammy of tsunami in Japan and flooding in Thailand exacerbated by inadequate infrastructure investment there causing critical shortages of components for the motor industry worldwide.
Symbian specialist until 31/01/2013 with interests in Maemo & MeeGo but an aversion to Windows!

This is true, up to a point. Fledgling companies sometimes take the Asian business ideal of flood the market with below cost product, get the market share, then drive out competition then PUT UP PRICES. Nokia is not a new company, and you cannot sustain a big company with cut price product always. It will eventually bite you on the bum... Repair costs, bad publicity etc etc. No Nokia are beyond that, they WERE A POWERHOUSE, sadly it seems, the others have spotted the correct voids in the market, and acted accordingly

I tend to think that nokia have a far superior product to iphone, but man does their marketing department need a rocket aimed fair and square at their posterior!!!

Thank you for your feedback.
The sole purpose of the Nseries board and Nokia Support Discussions is to make it possible for Nokia device owners to help each other with the use of existing Nokia products and services. Please avoid other topics, even if related to Nokia and its products.

To be fair to the original poster this topic was moved here by Michaels (Community manager) from another section of the site.

I'm guessing you are not currently in London .. and in Germany ... there you would notice Nokia is fighting back in a big way ... and besides .. Nokia is still the biggest mobile phone manufacturer by a huge marging..even if they have lost the position in the smartphone market for a bref moment ..
Nokia is back ... (even if they really never left) and i belive 2012 is going to be the year when the king returns to is rightful place as the no 1 in all segments.

I don't have the historical perspective of some of you, and Nokia is mostly invisible in the USA. I do read news articles, though, and think it was partly Nokia becoming too big for its own good, and partly from new competition in emerging markets. Big companies tend to react more slowly than small ones. Symbian may also be a difficult OS to program, but when threaded text messaging became the big thing, why did it take so long to release Conversations? Apparently until recently, Nokia was set up as multiple business units that competed against each other. I interpret that as "lots of wasted effort". Too many phone models, dozens of worldwide variations, most with buggy firmware, and increasingly negative word-of-mouth. Meanwhile Apple makes one new phone model a year in far fewer variations, and can invest the money in development and testing to release a cutting-edge product and get it right. Meanwhile Series 40 phones (always the major source of Nokia's income) were losing sales to homegrown manufacturers in new, big markets like China and India, and again Nokia is slow to react to local demands (dual sim capabilities?). Nokia's infrastructure was built with S40 sales, and as those fell, the company started to crumble. Belle is at least a year late, still needs work, and Nokia is now (firmly?) a follower instead of a leader.
I don't blame Nokia for releasing Windows OS phones. Palm did the same thing when their sales began to fall, and their next-generation OS was delayed. But IMHO only a former Microsoft executive could think that turning Nokia into a "Dell for mobile phones" is an enviable market position. I believe all recent Windows Phone releases have sold like lead balloons, and to stake the company on this venture, with no new homegrown OS in the pipeline, is foolish and threatens to banish Nokia to obscurity. I come from the "people use Linux (or insert another OS here) as their way of telling Microsoft to go to hell" camp, and certainly won't be buying one myself.

Nokia and Microsoft CAN be strong together,
Everyone* has a PC running windows,
Many poeple have an xbox.
if Mokia can get it's act together and give me a way to stream content at high speed between my Phone and my PC then Microsoft will win.
and no this is not APP stuff, this is stuff that belongs in an update.
I'm out,I get myself some MP3 files from a mate on bluetooth - I want to be able to get into a wifi hotspot and upload that data to my PC.
If my PC is off i want it to sit on Microsoft servers until i switch my pc on.
I want to make video calls.
If my PC is on at home (or in standby) I want to be able to record on my phone, and have it streamed and saved onto my PC

Since the release of the 3210 i've impressed everyone with my nokia phone.....
You got a sony....ha
You gat a samsung....ha
You got a motorola...ha
I'VE GOT A NOKIA
Since then i've had nothing but......
Up untill the start of the so called smart phone...
I belive all nokias were smart phones, as they always brought something new.
I always had Nokia up untill 2009.
ioS was getting stronger...Andriod was on the scene.
Nokia was falling behind....
I had the 5210(i think thats what it was)....brilliant phone....i had the 5800 another brilliant phone....but it was not a smart phone anymore.
Since then i hoped Nokia would keep up with the game or at least go with Android....but no.
I went else where...
I have the Nokia N8 but it is to slippery and the paint comes off to easy and the firmware is rubbish...evern with the Anna/Bella update.....The satnav is brilliant thow.
I was holding out high hopes for the Lumia.......
But alas it seems not to be.
I hope Nokia do reform and sort out their problems and get back on top of the game, as they have been apart of my life for so long and i am just longing for that nokia handset that set's the standard again....

I do not agree at all ! For people who need to relay heavily on mobile communication and now with all the upcoming GPS options with NOKIA I think NOKIA is comming back. Guys look at Spain, Germany, France.
But yes NOKIA in some way became to big, they where to slow !
And Elop and his elite, I think they are stalling the Symbian updates for a reason. They are getting windows devices on the market, and thats whats it all about, that is sad !
.
NOKIA dont delay these symbian updates any longer ! ! !

Yes this is right most of the apps are not for Nokia as of now. But, it does not mean Nokia fallan back. I still think Nokia handsets are the best with easiest & to-the-point operations.
NOKIA
Best & Easy Operations
Long Life Handsets
Best Management software (OVI)
Others
Lacking in almost all above and most of them just have Good Look Nothing else.
*** I'll prefer a normal wife with brains rather then a Super Sexy GirlFriend without ***
Yes I do agree Anna spoiled Nokia and Nokia must act fast to come back.
I am sure Nokia will do the needful ASAP.
*** Request Please Please come back with CDMA Handsets ***

Nokia was best making dumb phones.
They failed when they tried to create touch screen based smart phones.
Unlike Apple, they tried to evolve a key based operating system into touch based. They failed miserably. Their turn around product was N97. It was expensive and rubbish. This irked their large loyal fanbase.
Nokia is still doing good in developing market where people still predominantly buy smartphones.

I dont know too many companies that can afford to lose a billion dollars in 1 year.
All the people which Nokia sacked or sold off to other companies as entire units along with the knowhow and patents.

If you mean Nokia, they have been losing over a billion dollars per quarter (not per year) for the last 4 quarters.
