when i plug my n8 t the tv with the hdmi cable, nothing comes up. but my friend also has the same phone and it works on the same tv with the same cable. i dont see any settings that out of place. what could be wrong. my phone is upto date aswel with latest updates.

not sure. have you tried re-installing the current firmware thru Nokia Suite? if that doesn't work, then you may need to perform a three-finger hard reset as an absolute last resort before needing to take your phone to your local Nokia Care for inspection: http://nokia.com/support

Remember to perform a backup of all personal data to your PC and/or online storage first.

I know you said your settings look good but just check settings/Applications settings/Big Screen is set to Start Big Screen.

I'd stay away from that "3 fingered reset" unless you are very confident with Nokias as it deletes some important files that are difficult to get back.

There is a good guide on AllAboutSymbian on cleaning up the N8, start with the simplist steps first and work up, that Ultimate Reset can cause a lot more problems than it solves.
