Just spoke to customer service and after a bit of pushing and prodding, they told me that I was having a hardware malfunction and it was in need of a replacement or it needed to be sent in for repair. Luckily out hasn't been 2 Weeks since I purchased and I haven't had it for longer that 4 days in my possession. Hoping to return it for one that was not made in China

I have the same problem. Sometimes the camera starts if I change it to video recording -mode and then back to the photo camera - but this does not help always. Restart helps sometimes, but not always. Even the hard-restart (keeping the lock-button down and pressing the power button until the phone trills three times) does not seem to solve the problem. The camera can again work - and then after couple of pictures it stops working again :-((((

Somehow I have a feeling that this is a software bug... or maybe I'm just doing some wishful thinking as I would not like to give my phone away for some weeks.

Anyhow: very annoying problem. Probably I anyhow have to give my phone to Nokia service and go back to N8.

EDIT: And there's very few apps running in the phone. No "Extra Buttons". I also cleaned up the start screens - without any cure for this problem...

I sent my 808 to service and got it back today. They made software update and testing and told that the phone is now fine.

But in fact it's not fine: The camera is still not working. Many times the lens does not open and I just see a black screen (the shutter on at the lens stays closed).

So this is not a software problem. It's simply some mechanical malfunction. I have to bring my camera back to the service... and wait another two weeks again. I hope that now they finally will repair it and not only do another software update

Hi people I am new here on forum and i hope i am not missing the subject, but  i also have problem with nokia 808 camera. Everything is ok when i start the phone, but after few hours it wont open, i can see picture trough camera but there is nothing else on screen, no buttons on screen, just picture of what camera is point at. Camera button also not working. When i turn it off and on again everything is ok for few hours, than again same problem. Anyone have same issue or solution? I allready tried to delete apps and factory reset, nothing worked. Sorry for bad english and thanks for reply

Can concur with your description in every respect, although I can still use camera with Camera Pro or Silent Film Director for Video. Ironically when you can image through camera upon screen prolonged holding of Menu (middle) button elicits no open applications!

Unfortunately currently intermittent by nature and would be complete waste of time taking to Nokia Care facility!

Occasionally  this expensive phone takes its sweet time start showing a picture like 5-10 seconds of black screen.

I just wait and its usually worked, since its sort of a "infant technology" camera with its huge new 41MP sensor and on a single core platform I try and not multitask or expose it to allot of conflicting inputs so it don't potentially freeze or crash.

I don't have many applications installed on it, not that extra buttons thingy.

Beside that its just the useless popups of "Connection Failed - Connection Unavailable" that were increased in the last SW update.

No you don't need a SIM in the phone to use the camera. I bought the 808 fro the camera. I'll probably never put a SIM in it

Similar problem here. Camera does not open, or opens but does not show the necessary software buttons. If I restart the phone, it will work a couple of times and then the problem occurs again. Tried a hard reset, but the problem comes back. Feels like a software problem though. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I have the same problem. I cured it last time with a hard reset. Unfortunately that cost me 2 business contacts lost via an oversight not backing up which cost me a deal having to do all this and which I feel a great deal of bitterness about. Still, now everything is going fine. Then I 'upgrade' to the new camera app update 05/Mar/13 for the 808. The camera doesn't work from that point with the symptoms above that everyone is complaining about.

However - Silent movie director still records, and I bet (like last time it has the same symptions) that if I installed QTCamera from the QTExamples it would work fine. 

So I try again today a H/W reset with *#7370#. I then do a restore. Camera still not working! Arrgh! Ths phone is no good without the camera! Another H/W Factory Reset and still no good.

What can I do?

New symptom : Restart and then try Slient Film Director - not the Camera app.

It simply says 'Activating Camera' and hangs.

This is trampjuicerocks here again - couldn't log in without 404 errors - seems even this website is unstable nowadays.

Still no luck getting the camera working - this phone is heading back if I cannot get it going.

OK - did the 3 finger reset - down Vol + Camera button + Menu + Shutdown. It rebooted and I took my fingers off and it totally reset the device. The camera now works. I am getting pretty p*ssed off by all this though.

Very much fed up with this moblie. I took this mobile for its best camera sensor but unfortunately camera options are not available. Whenever I reset the phone it start working for an hour or two and again same problem arises. Please help. NOKIA I am begging help from you.

I have a similar problem...  Started after installing the recent camera and gallery update -- installed OTA. 

After installing the update and rebooting, the ? shutter ? of the camera doesn't open when any camera-based application is started (or when the camera button is pressed).

I have never had any problem with the camera before.

I have tried uninstalling various apps/utilities to see if there was some sort of conflict with the update.  I have tried various camera settings.

I will try a full reset this weekend.

Hihi~ Had you try to disable the Geotag? My PV had the similar problem too, but after i disable the geotag, so far it works for 3 days without giving me any problem.
Setting-->Privacy-->Save Location Info in Camera-->no.

I have the same problem. Drives me crazy. Have done a total of four hard resets. Every time the camera works fine and after a few days fails to open properly: camera opens but I don't see any software buttons or it freezes. I wil try the Geotag tip. I know that I have shut of location services to spare battery. Maybe the camera gets 'confused' when the Geotag is on while locations settings are of. Worthwile trying. Can't do it right now because I don't have the phone with me.

Location services on or off makes no difference. But disabling Geotag seems to matter. I disabled it and so far I didn't have the camera problem again. It had been to short to be conclusive, but if this solves the problem it will make me very happy. The geotag should work, but I can live without it. Better than having a camphone that I cannot use as a camera. I will report in a week or so whether this solves my problem definately.
