"Connection error" and GSM/UTMS switching - Help me nail my service provider

I have a Nokia 5800 xpressmusic.  Worked fine until about a month ago since when about 75% of calls started failing with "Connection Error".  Vodafone claim the phone is faulty but if I manually switch to GSM, calls all work.  A quick web search implies I'm not alone in this and the finger of suspicion indicates that Vodafone have done something which means the 2G/3G switching isn't working.  Phone firmware is up to date.

Any diags I can get from the phone to prove its Vodafone's network at fault?  I'm a software engineer so more than happy to run a "special firmware" if there's a Nokia engineer reading this.

It's a pain because GSM makes calls but I need to switch to suft, and we don't have perfect 3G coverage here so I can't leave it in 3G mode.

Hi papadeltasierra,

Welcome to the Nokia forum.

Try a hard reset with *#7370# and default security code 12345. Make a backup first with Nokia Suite, but don't make a backup of the Settings as this will backup a potential bug, which will make the problem come back as soon as you place the backup back onto your phone. Once you've created the backup, reset the device with the codes stated above.

Once the device has rebooted, update or reinstall the latest software and place the backup back onto your phone. Once you've done the above, there shouldn't be any problems with the phone itself.

Have you asked Vodafone for a new SIM card? It might be that something is faulty with the SIM card in the device.

If all the above fails, visit a local care centre where they can check it out and investigate. In any case, let me know how you get on so that I can troubleshoot further, if necessary.

Iris, reset the 5800 and reinstalled all the software which went missing (Nokia maps always need updating, looses my London tube map etc) and things seem better.  Since the problem was intermittent I can't be 100% sure that it's cured it but so far, so good.  Thanks for your help.

Re: "Connection error" and GSM/UTMS switching - Help me nail my service provider

Iris, sadly your suggestion to completely reset the phonehas not helped (I did say the problem was interemittent :-( ).

Again this morning I got the "conection error/disconnected" problem trying to make calls.  I switched the phone to "just GSM" instead of automatic and could immediately make a call.

Any more suggestions?  I'm afraid that this is going to turn into a see-saw of Vodafone blaming the Nokia phone and nokia blaming the Vodafone network unless you can suggest a way of diagnosing what is going wrong here.

Thanks,

Papadeltasierra

Re: "Connection error" and GSM/UTMS switching - Help me nail my service provider

Hi All,

I'm getting the exact same problem with our devices at work, mostly on Nokia phones, we have E72 and recently brought 15x C5's and all of them are getting the connection error unless I change them to GSM only. We're also with Vodafone. I've put a brand new sim in one of the C5's and did a factory reset but had no success. A couple of our SonyEricsson phones had the problem but that seems to have stopped now so is it Vodafone or Nokia problem? I don't really know.

Papadeltasierra, have you resolved this?

Thanks in advance.

Derek
