"Unable to connect to mail service server" on C7 (Symbian^3)

When I try to set up the "new mailbox" widget (the one with tiny icons of OVI, Yahoo, Microsoft, and Gmail), I get the error mentioned above. I get the error after tapping on the widget and then on "create new mailbox", and then on "Start".

I have already completed a successful setup of an Exchange mailbox. Now I want to set up a POP3 mailbox. I am connected by wifi and my internet is working fine on the phone. I would appreciate any suggestion. Many thanks in advance.

Update: I received the following response from Nokia technical support:

"Thank you for emailing the Nokia Care Contact Center.

In response to your concern, we would like to inform you that you the reason that you are receiving the said error message because you are using WiFi connection. Please be inform that the initial connection when setting up a mailbox is using a packet data. We recommend that you try to use packet data service when you set up a new mailbox on your device.

If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again. To ensure proper handling of your case, kindly continue using the current subject line.

You may check out all the phones and accessories and purchase them online through www.nokiausa.com. For further inquiries, you may call our Sales Department at 1-866-596-6542 and we will definitely be of assistance in finding the product for you.

Thank you for your e-mail.

Kind regards,

Gertrude R.
Email Specialist
Nokia, Inc."

I tried "Gertrude's" suggestion and turned off my wifi router, connecting only via packet data provided by T-mobile. I received the same error message. Clearly, Gertrude was wrong.

Note also that I'm getting this error message BEFORE I have entered any details about the mailbox I want to set up.

Is it not possible to set up more than one mailbox in Symbian^3? I know that you can only set up one Exchange server mailbox. But the second mailbox I wanted to set up would be using SMTP protocol.

Re: "Unable to connect to mail service server" on C7 (Symbian^3)

Update #2: I found a workaround. I installed Mobile Documents, which allows you to set up push-email access. My work email is synced now even when i'm out of the office. The only problem is that Mobile Documents does not support syncing of calendar, only emails.

But Nokia Mail for Exchange should be able to connect to the Exchange server at my work even when I'm outside my work network. After all, MS Outlook on my laptop is able to do this automatically. I shouldn't need to install TWO applications or TWO mailboxes to access my work email both at work and at home.

Re: "Unable to connect to mail service server" on C7 (Symbian^3)

This happenned today on my N8. I think Nokia has an email gateway for the Nokia handsets' mail clients and it's having problem right now. Nokia, is that true?

I tried "Gertrude's" suggestion and it worked for me!   I AM USING A NOKIA N8

Background:  I had a working 'Mail for Exchange' mailbox but it stopped working.  Deleting and recreating the mailbox was unsuccessful because each time I clicked START it seemed to try and use some existing settings hence 'Unable to Connect to mail service server. Try again later'.  Very frustrating.

Basically I deleted the Wireless Access Point that my phone kept connecting to.

Opened up Web Browser and made sure it made a connection using my Service Provider (UK Orange) and not a wireless connection.

Went to add a mailbox and I got the full list of mailbox choices and was able to Setup 'Mail for Exchange'.  Entered all the credentials and settings.

Hey presto !  My Exchange mailbox is working again and Calendar sync.

Woo hoo!

My internet is working fine on the phone. I would appreciate any suggestion. Many thanks in advance.

For those still looking for a solution, Gmail has been asking for a specific password to authorize apps. Just go to this page: https://accounts.google.com/b/0/IssuedAuthSubTokens#accesscodes

And then where it's written:
"Step 1 of 2: Generate new application-specific password

Enter a name to help you remember what application this is for:"

Create a name such as the model of your mobile and it will generate a password. That's the password you must type on the mail settings on your device! ;D

Re: "Unable to connect to mail service server" on C7 (Symbian^3)

Thank God someone posted this thread! I have had a N8 for a year and was ready to throw it in the garbage after lengthy conversations with Nokia support, who are as useful as a receptionist on her first day at work.

My issue was I could not connect to the exchange server ever since they upgraded my phone to Symbian Belle. We went through factory resets, mail deletes and reinstallations, their last suggestion was to change my hotmail password on a pc, then call Hotmail to advise them that I want to set up on my phone! Im like, are you crazy? There must be an easy solution! Then in the midst of the call we managed to delete all 600 of my phone contacts.I was livid.

While waiting for an email from Nokia support telling me how to back up my files and do a total factory reset (im still waiting for this email to appear) I decide to search myself on google and here I am....

NOKIA - please update your cust support screens with these 2 useful points:

1. When inputting your details into mail exchange, the user name is the SAME AS YOUR EMAIL

2. When composing an email and searching for a contact from your hotmail, you must CONNECT VIA YOUR PHONE SERVICE PROVIDER, NOT VIA WIFI.

That's it, all done. No more issues, although I do have several more white hairs now. Thanks Nokia. You suck.

Dear Sha_B,
The first solution didn't work with me and the second can't be done because my phone is E7-00 and its battry can't be removed.

Please give me more solutions because I'm so bored of this

Re: "Unable to connect to mail service server" on C7 (Symbian^3)

I had this issue on my e63.  I noticed my Gmail wasn't syncing, so I deleted the mailbox and attempted to reinstall it.  However I couldn't get to the point where it would ask for my password.  I kept receiving the error message above.

I tried all sorts of tricks, but the answer turned out to be: waiting.  I tried several times a day (making sure Packet Data was on and not WiFi) for three days and then one day it just finally worked.

Hope this is the answer for you too.

Re: "Unable to connect to mail service server" on Nokia x6

I am experiencing the same thing on my Nokia X6 which I have had for less than two weeks. My phone was receiving Yahoo email perfectly. The problem seemed to occur after I linked/set up OVI between my laptop & phone and/or used the 'offline' profile a few times to save on battery & airtime. I have not even used the phone on WiFi yet, so I am not sure that this is the problem. At one point the message was not the above, but something like 'Cannot connect using the detals given', refering to my Yahoo email address & password. I also reset factory settings & deleted address' but like everyone, that didn'y work.
Can anyone please help?

Re: "Unable to connect to mail service server" on Nokia x6 - SOLUTION!!

Eureka! I solved it! :smileyvery-happy:

Hi all - 'Starflower26' above is me too - I forgot my password, so had to create a new account.:smileytongue:

I seem to have solved my problem, and it was qute simple. after trying everything & researching on forums to no avail. On my Nokia X6, I ended up going into MENU - SETTINGS - APPLICATION MANAGER - INSTALLED APPS.

I highlighted the "Nokia Email" app, opened "Options" and clicked on "Uninstall". I closed all that, went back to try set up my email, and it WORKED! The phone downloaded & installed "Nokia Email" automatically again & the app started properly & my Yahoo!mail is being delivered to my phone normally once again.

I hope this helps someone else out too!
