Connection problem with PCSuite (Code: MMListEmpty)

Hello all

I'm having trouble getting PC Suite to work. When I got my phone back in February, the version of PC Suite that came with it was working fine, but after an automatic update it stopped working.

My configuration is as follows:
Nokia N70
Windows XP Pro SP2
PC Suite 6.8 rel 22 (I have been trying with previous releases as well)
USB connection using the cable that came with the phone

Problem description:
After installing PC suite, before connecting my phone I click on the "Get connected" button and get the following error message:
"There is no available connection type and therefore the connection to phone cannot be established. The wizard will exit"
Or if I press the "Manage connections" button I get:
"Cannot use the media modules. Please reinstall Nokia PC Suite. (Code: MMListEmpty)."

Things I have tried:
1. Uninstalling PC Suite, running PC Suite Cleaner 3, and re-installing PC Suite.
2. I followed all the advice on this thread http://discussions.nokia.co.uk/discussions/board/message?board.id=pcsuite&message.id=263 including setting the registry permissions as described on page 3, and re-registering all the various DLLs as mentioned in pages 1 & 2.
3. I've also tried re-installing just the cable connectivity driver (which is in "C:\Documents and Settings\[USER]\Local Settings\Temp" after installing PC Suite). When I do that I don't get the error message. When I then plug in the N70 it is recognised but if I try running any applications like backup or image transfer I get an error message "The phone refused the connection". Also when I reboot my PC, I start getting the original error message again "Cannot use the media modules.. etc".

Does anyone have any suggestions?

thanks in advance!

Re: Connection problem with PCSuite (Code: MMListEmpty)

This is a common problem with a couple of threads floating around discussing the issue, try here: http://discussions.nokia.co.uk/discussions/board/message?board.id=pcsuite&message.id=2964 I just ended up downloading the drivers for the cable seperately and manually installing (make sure you know where you have saved the downloaded file). I have to do this everytime that I fire up the suite, but it is the simplest work around that I have found. Hope that helps.

Re: Connection problem with PCSuite (Code: MMListEmpty)

Hi stevieb,

thanks for the reply. I just had a look at that thread but I don't think it contains any other workarounds that I haven't tried. As I mentioned above, I have tried installing the cable drivers on their own after installing PC Suite but that hasn't done the trick for me (although I was getting a different error message until rebooting my PC).

You could try the work-around I found in this thread: http://discussions.nokia.co.uk/discussions/board/message?board.id=pcsuite&message.id=3838 I haven't tried it myself yet, so I can't vouch for it, but you might find it useful.

Re: Connection problem with PCSuite (Code: MMListEmpty)

Hi,

Could you check this: Open folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\PC Suite\Settings\
Is there a Platform.dat file (->there should be).
If the file is exist, check the file permission (there should be full permission in Admin and SYSTEM at least).
Open the file with notepad and check are there some path to C:\Program Files\Common Files\PCSuite\Transports\ folder.

If everyting was ok, try this:
1. Delete C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\PC Suite folder.
2. Click start menu, Run, type: regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Common Files\PCSuite\Transports\NCLUSBMM.dll" and OK
(it should create that Platform.dat file back in there)
3. Restart PC.

Re: Connection problem with PCSuite (Code: MMListEmpty)

Hi miksu

My files do not have permissions for the different users (i.e. there is no Security tab), maybe because my PC is not in a Windows domain?
Anyway I did all the other steps you described:
- checked the file and it contained paths to the Transports folder
- deleted the PC Suite folder
- re-registered the DLL which created the folder and the Platform.dat file
- restarted my PC
But I am getting the same error.

Re: Connection problem with PCSuite (Code: MMListEmpty)

Hi,

Ok, it is quite difficult to know what is going wrong...It would be nice to get some traces from your PC Suite! (Then I can compare traces with my PC Suite and find out what may cause this problem).

Can you take some logs from PC Suite and add those log files available to net?

If you can, do it:
1. Go to http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Filemon.html and download Filemon (it is end of the page).
2. Start FileMon.exe and click 'Options', 'Filter/Highlight..' and set string: *servicelayer* to 'Include' option.
3. Go to http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Regmon.html and download Regmon (it is end of the page).
4. Start FileMon.exe and click 'Options', 'Filter/Highlight..' and set string: *servicelayer* to 'Include' option.
5. Press 'Ctrl+X' to both tools and then open the task manager and select ServiceLayer.exe (or Service~1.exe), press End Task button and then Ok.
6. Open Nokia Connection Manager (Manage connection)
7. wait about 5 minutes and save logs and set those log files available to net....

Re: Connection problem with PCSuite (Code: MMListEmpty)

Hi miksu,

I just wanted to let you know that I have the log files but no place to upload them. I'm waiting for karim to give me access so that I can upload them on the forum. If you send me your email address I can mail them to you as well.

Re: Connection problem with PCSuite (Code: MMListEmpty)

Hi kurtsung,

I found a reason for this problem from log files. We have one different register value: In your register Shell value is "C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.exe" and in my PC it is "Explorer.exe" -> I think that is the reason for this media list empty error (at least I can repeat the same error in my PC when I added that path in Shell value)!

How to Fix:
1. Click Start menu, Run and type: Regedit and then OK.
2. Open key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
3. Select name Shell, click Menu and Modify.
4. Remove path from value so the value should be Explorer.exe (I think that path is not needed because Windows should be able to find that Explorer.exe process without that path!)
5. Restart your PC. (Just in case: If Windows icons are missing after restart -> add that path back to the register: Click buttons: Ctrl + Alt + Del, Task Manager, click File, New Task(Run...), type: Regedit, OK and open that key and change Shell value like it was.)

-> I hope that this solve your problem :smileyhappy:

Re: Connection problem with PCSuite (Code: MMListEmpty)

Yes, it works for me. Thanks very much! I never think of this. It's recommended by MetaProducets StartUp Organizer, when I run StartUp Guard, it said that don't specify path of explorer.exe is not safe and I accepted the suggestion fix.
And there is one more question, why PCSuite crash when the key was changed. It's kind of fragile.

Re: Connection problem with PCSuite (Code: MMListEmpty)

miksu, you're a star!

For some reason the registry value on my PC was "explorer.exe sys32rd.exe". I changed it to "explorer.exe" and it's working fine now, hurrah! Just transfered some photos and doing a long-needed backup now.

Thanks very very much!

Re: Connection problem with PCSuite (Code: MMListEmpty)

I've tried all the above and still no luck, very dissapointed in the software, love my N80 to bits but I'm having to use my work PC to transfer any data with PC suite 6.7, wish I'd never updated it now.
