I had same problem

I think it happens if Skype is open!!! not sure why

I updated my frameware without problem but after about 3 hours I discovered that I got some system errors and I wanted to reinstall the frameware but I got the error code 12017. I noticed that the only thing changed in my PC is that I opened skype. So I closed skype and the update went through flawlessly

I've been having problems with ovi suite and the software updater. The Ovi suite keeps saying that there's an unexpected error. I also tried the software updater but when I open it, a message pops up saying a critical component is missing and that I need to reinstall, but no matter how many times I reinstall it, the message keeps appearing.

Help?

I have tried unsuccessfully to update my N8-00 software but also get Error Code: 12017. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Ovi Suite but makes not a jot of difference, same error 12017 occurs. It seems similar to another company's software update process which should go through straightforwardly but often fails.

Then there's no other way to my knowledge, you probably have to wait for some time or try it out again at Nokia Care centre in your locality...

I was also having this 12017 error when trying to reinstall the software on my old Nokia N73 with Nokias Ovi suite but when that failed, I went looking for something else and stumbled across this solution.

You need to download the Nokia PC Suite for your phone from HERE. Type your phone model into the search box and click on the NOKIA PC SUITE link for your phone, not the Ovi Suite link. Click the appropriate language link for you. Wait for the download to finish then install the program. Run through the program set up procedure and connect your phone to your PC when instructed. When the program has installed click on the update phone software icon, circled in red below.

This will download the Nokia Software Updater program. Install this program and run through the set up procedure. Once the installation has finished the software should detect your phone, provided you haven't disconnected it, and check for any updates and give you the option of reinstalling your phone's software. I hope this works for you as it did for me, good luck.

Answer is simple.

Problems with internet connection.

Nothing more.

Stop downloading porn, fake windows, etc.

Disable antivirus or firewal, and check again.

Just wanted to say, I was getting this error with my N8-00, but as previously mentioned, closing Skype on my PC helped. This is on Windows 7.

So - close Skype. Make sure it's closed by quitting the program in the task bar.

This is the ONLY solution that worked for me. I followed your instructions to the letter. Thanks a million times over.  FYI. The beta trial is over for anyone who is thinking of going that route. If u click on the links in the earlier posts it takes u right back to the ovi/nokia suite. Or in other words SQUARE 1.  TRY THIS POST. IT WORKS!!!

Thanks JetBlack. Your suggestion solved the problem. I have a C7-00 and tried to update to Symbian Anna and it kept failing until I install NSUpdater from Nokia PC Suite.

I'm trying to update/change language on my old n95 8gb and I can't get it to work for me Tried to follow JettBlack's instructions with no luck - Nokia PC Suite shows my phone as updated to latest version of software 30.0.18. Curiously Ovi suite shows update 35.0.12 available, but any download attempt results in 12017 error

I wrote to Nokia about it, but week later they do not seem to bother...
