While there are two ways for you to update the software of your phone, both require internet connection.
1. Using the phone: FOTA (Firmware Over the Air)
If you wish to update your phone using this method, you should have internet connection either packet data or WiFi although the latter is more recommended because updating is faster.
2. Using Nokia Suite
You can download Nokia Suite here onto your computer: http://www.nokia.com/global/support/nokia-suite.
Your computer should have internet connection for the Nokia Suite to start searching if there's an update available or not.
