Dear fellow Nokia phone geeks,
Hi and how are you. Let me start by saying I mean no disrespect to JimmyIreland, who's open letter was thoughtful and fair, but I despise "open letters" because they are the work of individuals who think they speak for the group and assume (incorrectly) that anyone cares what they have to say.
The company, Nokia, puts out some of the best hardware on the market, including the best camera phone on the market, and an OS that, while much maligned, has some huge advantages over other systems. It's very stable, uses fewer resources, and ultimately demands less of it's hardware than any other smartphone OS.
In 10 months since the N8 was released it has had two complete firmware updates, one in the process and one soon to be released. Nokia was clear about the fact that Anna would be released for some vanilla variety phones in some countries by the end of August. They also said that other countries and variant phones would follow.
Even with this knowledge that Anna would be released by the end of August, dozens of people complained on these boards that Anna was not coming as promised pointing out that Elop was responsible for screwing you and that you are going to go right out and ditch your Nokia and buy an iPhone. Guess what, not only did the initial release come out by the end of August, it came out in the middle of August.
Nokia also told us that they could not predict exactly when each phone would be updated and that certain countries and variants would be forthcoming. Yet you complained that they should have released all the updates at once or that they should have an exact release schedule. That is unrealistic my friends.
Obviously if they were to release all of the updates at once, it would mean that everyone would have to wait for the single release and then, upon the release, everyone would have to deal with the technical support nightmare associated with such a worldwide release. Releasing a schedule would require that Nokia be able to fully control all of the variables and that again, they would have to make some folks wait to get the update until all of the variables could be controlled and a release schedule could be created.
You speculated that Microsoft and/or AT&T were the evil doers responsible for the fact that some of you do not have your update yet. You told the community that you were done with Nokia and that you would never buy another Nokia.
However, you're still here posting your complaints. And every time I visit this board and see new messages posted under the a heading about Anna updates, I click on the thread hoping to learn something new. Nope, there you are still posting your complaints, your speculation and your threats.
Thank-you because reading your posts is like watching a train-wreck in slow motion. I no-longer need waste my time watching reality TV because I am getting my fill here! However I ask you to do us a favor and go ahead and ditch your Nokia and pick up one of those Androids (because Google is so great at updating their phones) or iPhones (because Apple produces such great hardware).
All my Best,
cecampbell

cecambell,
Actually... people like you who obviously have nothing better to do with your time than complain about people who are complaining are even worse than the people you are crying about.
I know for a fact if that I had Anna on my US N8, or was generally happy with everything on my phone, I would not be wasting my time here in this forum trolling threads about people who have still not gotten Anna yet.
Stop worrying about people who have not gotten Anna yet and go enjoy your N8, or whatever Nokia phone you have.

The complainers are outposting those of us who are saying "shut up" by a ratio of 20 to 1. As I pointed out, my reason for visiting and reading posts is to learn something and maybe contribute a solution or two. It's very tiresome and much like watching an episode of New Jersey Housewives to come here and read the constant complaints, unfulfilled threats and completely false rumors.

It would be nice if the excitement here over Anna/Belle bubbled over into increased Symbian phone sales, allowing Symbian to become cool once again. ![]()
Myself, I don't visit this forum regularly, but do remember remarking that I'd hate being stuck in a bread line with some of the regulars...

I'm with you Cecampbell and thetao. I visit here to see if there is any news of possible release dates for my country, and all I ever see is a dozen threads or thereabouts about the USA not havng Anna yet. I have explained time and time again about things like Unbranded/Unlocked phones, and the process that is involved in getting updates out to people and their countries. even though all this info is in the FAQs at the begining of the forum.
I'm from Australia and as yet we dont have the update, but honestly from what i know of the update issue here in Australia I'm glad it hasnt been released yet, as much as i would love to update my E7.
It seems to easy for people to threaten Nokia by commenting on how they will ditch their phones and buy something else, but like you say they are still here, still complaining and whinging. And yet they all paid for their phones based on the features and benefits of that phone at that time. And without any date being given for possible updates, that nokia clearly states may or may not be released in every country or by every carrier.
They all seem so happy to comment on how Apple apparantly does world wide releases in one go, when in fact they dont. in fact Apple bearly gives you any choice as to what you can buy, with only a couple of phone on offer, unlike Nokia that has heaps of phones, because nokia realises that not everyone wants the same thing from a phone.
I wouldnt mine betting that some of these people are not even nokia customers, that they really work for another company and are on here just to stir up everybody. (not all, but possible some). Its either that or they cant read or are too lazy to read the posts that explains things to them. Anyway I have said my piece. Lets hope they all learn something soon.

I think people being **bleep** off has something todo with the fact that Nokia shipped the N8 with a load of problems, which it promised to address before or just after the new year (Jan 2011).
A year down the line people are still waiting for some fairly major fixes. Mind you, they're going to be disappointed when they actually get their hands on Anna...

Well cecampbell, it seems you have all figured it out. Good for you then, enjoy it.
Let me tell you only that we, Australian, Canadian, US, terrestrial Nokia users who complain in this forum, were not visiting this forum, neither to learn something, nor to give our opinions or whatever you like to do in here, if we were satisfied with our Nokia devices. We come in here to complain because we demand, as clients, our satisfaction and for that we need these so called "updates" but bugfixers would be better named. Maybe you will tell us we knew what we were buying; yes we knew and some of us still know what we have. The Nokia hardware is excellent and have so much potential and it's hardly scratched by the software what is yet a "work in progress". Is because of that potential we know we have and the many bugs that came with it that we complain in here to finally get it unleashed and full working in our hands.
My advice for you is to read the title before you get in somewhere you don't like and leave us with our complains that are not meant for you but for Nokia.
2011-10-06 17:29
I guess the people can complain all they want even though it will not make any difference in when you'll actually make any difference in when you'll get it. In this whine fest I do side with Nokia though. I'm not saying your complaint are not valid, they are, but how many different threads do we need saying the same thing. Just because you are on the internet doesn't mean that manners don't count.
I doesn't just make it more difficult for the forum moderators and developers who read these forums more difficult to find useful, that also applies to the rest of us who come here looking for answer. Yesterday I looked through most of the threads about the updates and I really could not find any useful information in them.
Do you mods have the ability to move posts from unrelated posts to this thread? I see no reason to have 50 americans and australians complaining a thread about the update in Slovakia.
Full Disclosure: I live in the US also and check my phone every morning for an update.
2011-10-07 14:27
Well it goes like this people, Once nokia headoffice designs the firmware it goes out to the nokia arm that looks after that part of the world. eg Nokia USA. It then becomes their repsonsibility to finalise the firmware and get the approvals from teh carriers. Nokia USA will the correct and issues that the carriers find. Once its completed and tested and approved the will notify someone like Skee who will update the servers with the appropriate variant/ product codes.
It seems very obvious that Nokia USA are not watching these threads as we have not seen any comments from anyone nokia USA. I would suggest that you ring nokia USA and get some straight answers from them. And if you find something out then post it, but please dont keep opening new threads all the time. All it does is make it harder for everyine to find what they need.

Nice! Nokia screws things up and then has the guts to complain about nagging customers.
Do some propper testing prior to launching a product. Now it's your customers who do the testing.
I have no N8,but had my fair share with an E5.
My problems aren't solved, nor will they be solved.
You might think you have the best phones, but I will walk away and never lookback when the 4S hits the stores.

I think I speak for most people here who are angry and upset about Anna not being released in the USA, when I say that we just want Nokia to acknowledge us and hear our voice.
Up until now, neither skyee or any Nokia employee will even acknowledge us with a response.
I hate the iphone, and do not own a single Apple product, but know many people that do.
But let me tell you this.. Apple customer support is top notch, and they would NEVER ignore and dis-respect their customers like Nokia is doing here in this forum.
While I am angry that Anna is not ready yet for the U.S, all it would take is a nice polite reply from skyee acknowledging our frustrations and concerns.
Steve Jobs (may he rest in peace) was CEO of a billion dollar company and he used to reply to customer email himself, yet Nokia cannot even put in the effort to reply to any of our posts concerning Anna for the U.S.
This is not how I would run a company thats for sure, and any employee of mine who ignored customers like what is going on here would be shown the door...

Agreed. My customers would walk away from me and never look back if I treated them like this. It's a shame really, that no one comes onto this officially Nokia forum to explain the situation. The temperature would surely go down if they did. However, threatening to ditch your Nokia for a Samsung or iPhone is a lame argument, because let's face it, if you didn't have some love for Nokia, you'd hardly be on this nerdy forum now would you?! ![]()
Let's continue to wait for Symbians Anna and Belle, and accept that Nokia have (and always had) atrocious customer service. It ain't changing any time soon, people. Live with it or just get moody.
2011-10-08 13:32
Honestly, people, skyee has told you what she has told everybody else. She hasnt treated you any different to anyone else. The ones you need to be complaining to here is Nokia USA.
Really how often do you see them on here. compared to skyee who I think has worked quite hard being on here every week, especially when you conisder as the FAQ's state that this is a user forum, for the user to search for there own answers to issues they have, and to help those who needs help. It is NOT a forum for you to receive direct help from Nokia staff. However Nokia staff are free to join if they want and to help if they want. It is monitored by moderators and some nokia staff, but they are not obliged to respond as its a user forum for the users to help each other.
The fact that skyee comes on here is brilliant and we are very lucky. You need to be contacting Nokia USA to find out what they are doing. They are responsible for the USA and Canada, RING them. Go and see them if you have to. Encourage them to join and contribute. emphazise that it will go to helping raise the level of nokia ownership if users can see that Nokia USA are here to help.
But we cant force anyone to join, and as the terms and conditions state just like apple and others, not all features or services may be provided in your country or area. And this decision will usually come down to the carriers. So go and find out from Nokia USA. I along with many others are tied of hearing about the USA, and how you think you are the last ones on the planet and have been forgotten and ignored. we have our countries to worry about. No disrespect intented, I do understand your situation we are in exactly the same boat, the main difference here is that Nokia Australia is online with us. YOU need to get Nokia USA to be online with you, and honestly you are not going to do it, by staying on here whinging to other users, who are just like yourselves.
I know this may sound harsh, but you need to do this for yourselves. RING THEM, dont complain to other users, we cant fix it for you. And to be honest if you cant do this, then some of us will just consider that you are from the competition and just here to stir up trouble and discontent.

Am with the non whingers here. People keep saying they have all of these problems with their N8's I am sure there is as with most products the odd issue but I wonder about the configurations that some people may be running that may cause these issues, with the hardware or UI being blamed for them. When used as a phone and a research tool for weather and information with some music these phones are great. As with any computer based product I often question some of the games and junk that are installed on them.
It is unlikely that the Anna or Belle updates will fix some of the issues if the phones are configured in the same manner. Everyone I know who has an N8 has none of these issues and is more than impressed with their Nokia. Bring on the updates but I am happy to wait until they are right for our country so as these forums are not needed to correct software issues and can be used as a source of information rather than a place to vent frustrations caused by a lack of patience.

I purchased my N8 from Amazon who sold it to me with the promise of an update to Anna. Since new N8s are being sold with Anna, that seemed reasonable to me. However, the waiting around had exceeded my return window, so now I'm stuck and not very happy.
In my case, I really need the portrait keyboard and the camera update. If Nokia were to release them separately from Anna, or an independent software developer had created apps with the same functionality, then I wouldn't be complaining. I guess I could put the phone in a drawer until the update comes around to the US but I spent hundreds of dollars on this thing and oddly enough, I don't want to. I just want it to work as promised. And yes, Amazon bears some of the blame but so does Nokia.
I have had enough Android phones to not want another but seriously, Apple's hardware is as good as or better than Nokia (camera excepted) and for the money, why would I want to go through this yet again? I like my independence and no contracts but at some point, you start to rethink it.
Nokia makes awesome phones. Their software and customer service - not so much. As a software support person myself, I really do sympathize with them but as a consumer, I'm sick and tired of phones (not just Nokia) being rushed out with serious software flaws. That's one reason I got tired of Android, flashing my phone every other week got really old, even if it was fun in the beginning.
For almost five hundred dollars, I expect it to just work. That's not unreasonable, especially when the same hardware is being sold with the fixes I need. For not too much more cash, I could get the most popular smartphone on the planet (with an app store to match). As much as I like Nokia, the experience of owning one in the US is more and more of a drag. If they don't want us as customers, why not just stop selling us phones and promises?

Firstly IF Amazon gave you a promise of an update, Then I'm damn sure they didnt give a date, nor would they promise something like a portrait keyboard. If you really needed a keyboard like that why the heck firstly did you BUY it, and secondly why didnt you buy an E7 at least you can see the converstaion whilst using the keyboad part of the phone. Whilst the cam might not be a 12MP it is an 8MP cam and more than enough for most things, they are similar size and do simialr things only the E7 has the keyboard. When you buy soemthing you buy it for what it is, not what it could be. There is never any guarantees that an update either fully or in part can or will be availble in any particular country. that is the control of the carriers in that country
Also if new N8's were being sold with Anna obviously at the same time for you to compare them like you have in your statement, why didnt you buy one of them. You have been told you will get an update, but you will have to be patient. If you read any of the threads that started to talk about the portrait keyboard, you would see that many people didnt like it, that it was hard to use.
If you want information about the Update then RING NOKIA USA and ask them, dont continue to complain to other users. Only Nokia USA will be able to give any extra information, other than what skyee has said. And currently that is, that its still being worked on.
