Symbian 9.5

Recently Symbian 9.5 has been released. Our N95 running with the Symbian 9.2. There are lots of improvements within the Symbian 9.5. I would like to know it will be update to the Symbian 9.5 by the future release of the firmware.

Re: Symbian 9.5

No, that won't happen. No nokia phone in the past has ever been updated to a new version of the operating system.

You may still get improvements and new features in future firmware updates.

Re: Symbian 9.5

I am so disappointed with that massage :smileysad: , because Symbian 9.5 got the solutions for the present problems of the high end phones like N95. We all know power consumption of the n95 is too high, so we can’t keeps our phone live with out recharging more than two days. There are many improvements with considering Symbian 9.2. They says Symbian 9.5 CPU and RAM usage is much more lower than other Symbian OSs, so updating to Symbian 9.5 it is possible to make our phone faster and improve the response time without changing our hardware. I just pointed few things only, there are lots of improvements in Symbian 9.5.

Re: Symbian 9.5

The old N95-1 doesn't have enough sd ram to run 9.3 so 9.5 is totally out of the question.

You will have to buy a new phone if you want 9.5. The first phone to feature that os is highly likely to be touchscreen sometime in 2009.

Sorry I didn’t get you. When we are installing a new firmware, it is re-flashing (some thing involving ROM not the SD Ram) isn’t it. If I am correct both N95-1 and N95-2 got 128mb flash ROM. that’s why NSU downloading 100 mb file when you are updating the firmware. If I am wrong, please explain a bit pal.

Re: Symbian 9.5

No, it's not that simple. You are talking about the space where the firmware is installed. I am talking about the SD RAM which is required for the smooth operation of the phone and the amount of programs that it can run at the same time.

The N95-1 only has 64mb of SD RAM and newer models like the N95-2 and N82 have 128mb of SD RAM. This is why the N95-1 is prone to out of memory errors and the other models are not.

This is also what would limit it from accepting a newer operating system.

See for yourself here:
www.forum.nokia.com/devices/N95
www.forum.nokia.com/devices/N95_8GB
www.forum.nokia.com/devices/N82

Other hardware changes and licensing issues also mean that 9.3 will not be available for existing models.

So the simple fact is that if you want a new OS you need to buy a new phone.

Re: Symbian 9.5

It's true that N95 will not get any FP upgrades due to licensing.
But there's a little correction here,
64 MB amount of RAM will able to handle FP2, 6210 Navigator is the example.

Re: Symbian 9.5

May be you guys correct, because of the licensing issues they are not going to update to the Symbian 9.5 on a future firmware release.

It's never happened in the past so chances of it happening now are almost zero.

Just be happy with what you've got because you'll always be able to improve it by installing extra software.

Look on the brightside it gives you something to look forward to knowing that your new phone has a nice new os. Wouldn't it be boring if your new phone had the same os as your old one?

Re: Symbian 9.5

but I have a question, this is Symbian 9.5, not Symbian 10, so it is just an improved version of Symbian 9.2. That’s why I am expecting Symbian 9.5 will be include in a future firmware.

And one more thing I don’t think it is not possible to get the some of features on Symbian 9.5 by installing software. ie. VPN client, reduce the power consumption and etc.

Do you think N96 will come with newer version of the OS than N95?

Re: Symbian 9.5

It doesn't matter what version the newer Symbian OS versions are numbered. New version has so far only appeared in new phone models, and never in firmware updates. I don't think that's going to change any time soon, if ever.

No, because 9.5 is the OS, not a firmware. So upgrade like you want is not possible.

Re: Symbian 9.5

Remember, Symbian 9.5 is based on touch screen.
Adding that to current devices is obviously impossible, even if Nokia wanted it.

no man Symbian 9.2 also support touch screen. Although Symbian 9.5 touch screen compatible, it is possible to install on a phones that don’t have that feature. Symbian is an OS just like Linux (may be it is a Linux). We are interacting with it using S60 interface. It is no need to support all the features of the OS by the device. Think about your computer and the it’s OS (Windows XP, etc.).
