Re: Symbian Anna update for USA N8s

Still waiting, reading the comments--doesn't seem effective--Nokia apparently does not give a damn about what ex-customers think--and current owners are ex-customers--which seems less important to them than potential customers of the Windows Phone--that must be the reasoning and intent.

An ex-customer is a one-shot deal to a bad company--e.g., you bought it, you own it, it is your problem, sold as is.  A company that cares about its customers and reputation does not take this one-shot approach.

A good, enlightened or reputable company, tries to address customer issues and keep their customers totally satisfied, and have mechanisms in place to do so.  Such companies are few.

Most other companies only respond to massive bad publicity and/or class action lawsuits--these are the only events that prompt them to take action.   Complaints and bad publicity have to reach critical mass.

Our complaints here in on a Nokia sponsored forum, and subject to monitoring.  It is useless to complain.

It is too bad; the N-8 is a nice phone in many ways, and I really want it as a keeper--and want to be loyal Nokia customer--13 years!   But after this experience, would seriously think more than twice before buying anything sold by Nokia, or recommending.

This is like the banks and telephone/cell phone service providers--free checking to new customers only, existing customers do not quality, and cheap plans only for new customers.  So one only benefits when one becomes an ex-customer, and let them woo you back.  This is the great marketing game that companies spend so much money on--the big swichero and getting conquest customer from other brands.

If a company just took very good care of its existing customers, and provided both good service and appropriate new products and services to improve the customer experience, then there would be no need for all that advertising or promotional marketing--word of mouth would spread the message.  Then what would all the highly paid marketing, CEO's and other bureaucrats do to justify their employment--so you see, they gotta play the game and keep churning.

So instead of making Symbian better go for Windows phone--restructure and lay off employees, every new CEO has to make an imprint--to justify his/her employment, and compensation.  So if ya came from Microsoft, push the Windows phone.

Re: Symbian Anna update for USA N8s

Nokia is frustrating - I know they make good hardware, better than most.  BUT, the software is glitchy.   I routinely have to wait for a day for email's to come through.

For this reason, I will be purchasing a Samsung Galaxy SII LTE as SOON as it hits my carrier.  I was HOPING that I would be able to use Symbian Anna for a few days before I get my new phone.  A good experience MIGHT impact my future purchasing decisions.

Why is this update not in North America yet?

Oh, and this is not exactly on topic, but I'm wondering if the Nokia/Microsoft match is the worst move they have ever made?  I've owned both WP7 and Symbian phones and can tell you that Symbian is better!  **bleep** were they thinking?

Well I guess time will tell. When you think about it, Nokia make the best hardware without a doubt. Microsoft has the biggest market share for the PC market operating systems. MS needed good quality hardware to make their wp7 OS to work properly and so what better than using a nokia Mobile.

Apps designer are, like it or not, moving away from symbian as they believe it too hard to design for. But there doesnt seem to be shortage of software designers for MS operating systems as a whole.

These days we all need Anitvirus software anyway for our smart phones no matter what platform we use. So we might as well continue to use one with an MS operating system. Also MS are throwing in a heap of software for free ( good for the end users), along with $30 million for advertising etc. for nokia.

SO who knows, to be honest, looks good on paper. but only time will tell.

Re: Symbian Anna update for USA N8s

The thing is, I've owned/used WP7... and I'm not 100% sure what the "W" is for.  It can't be "Windows", because the OS doesn't at all resemble or behave like the "windows" we use on PC's.  Any transfer of files from/to computer must be done using "Zune".  Don't bother trying to sync your contacts with outlook, cause it ain't possible... really, Symbian works much better with PC's than WP7 does!

Re: Symbian Anna update for USA N8s

Has anyone sent Nokia an email asking about the lack of an Anna update yet?

Seriously, all this pondering is one thing, but has anyone made an attempt to just send an email?

Many, Many times emails were sent to ask, also requested that they post update, and also to let us know individually via email onto our Ovi mail accounts.

The Anna release for North America has already started. Look for Rollingdice's post:

Re: Symbian Anna update for USA N8s

It makes me wonder though... Does anyone at Nokia read these threads? Whenever I type in N8 all I see are blogs and threads trashing their customer service for the increasingly annoying delays and mistakes they make and reporting issues that are still to be resolved.

If Elop or someone with a little power in Nokia decided to one day care for their product and look at these threads, maybe they would put some pressure on the people who are dealing with us and have them treat us a little better, at least acknowledging us and having them give us legitimate reasons for delays and real updates on the progress, not just leave us in the dark.

I've been waiting since August 28th for an update that was supposed to be released at the start of the summer and I still haven't gotten it!

Re: Symbian Anna update for USA N8s

I just did the update, failed three times, according to the updater, but the phone seems to have the Anna update and everything is faster.  But the Ovi tool updater stills says I have an error, and tells me to try again.

The Error message says:

"!  Something's gone wrong.  There's a problem with installing Symbian Anna update 1/2, Symbian Anna update 2/2 and Symbian Anna service pack.  There was a problem with the software update service.  Please restart Nokia Ovi Suite and try again.  If the problem persists, uninstall Nokia Ovi Suite and download the latest version of the application from www.nokia.com/ovisuite."

I guess after three tries, I have to do what they recommend, although I am a bit apprehensive about what else can go wrong.  Think maybe I should quite while I am ahead since the phone seems to be working and is faster.

I have the same for my E7. Seems like there's still a compatibility problem with some Qt stuff and the update. I wish someone would post a workable solution!

Nokias: 232, 3210, 3330, 6230, 6101, 6021, 6126, E75, E73, N900, N8, E6, E7, N9. There's a Samsung in there somewhere too, but...we don't talk about that.

Re: Symbian Anna update for USA N8s

So pleased those in the USA have finally got their updates. Considering we're still waiting in Australia, and you therefore aren't the last country in the world to get updated, is there anyone courageous enough to apologise to Nokia for all the bad-mouthing? I mean, there's clearly no political plot to delay the update until the WP7 models come out... or to punish current users because they're American... or that it will never come out... or that it will be rolled into Belle and you won't ever get Anna...

There seems to have been a lot of speculative bandwidth wasted trying to figure out what Nokia are doing, when it appears to me they've done exactly what they said they would do: get the update to you as fast as possible after all testing (carrier and local) was complete.

Re: Symbian Anna update for USA N8s

No apologies to Nokia warranted.  They failed to keep customers informed.  That was poor public relations.  People need to be informed.

Now I am installing Anna, tried 4 times already.  Hope it works the 5th time.

Re: Symbian Anna update for USA N8s

Tried 6 times to install Anna on my N8, did not work.  Still same error message as I posted earlier.  Uninstalled OviSuite from PC and reinstalled new download.

Should I uninstall OviSuite from N8 itself??  Error message was not specific as to OviSuite on PC or N-8.  Don't know how to do that, and afraid to.

Phone seems to have Anna installed, even though installer said there was a problem.

Give up for now.  Will wait for input from the rest of you USA guys and gals--maybe someone will have the solution or workaround.

At least we have something to work with now, although not yet working well.   Wonder if they test this stuff.  If I were in charge of the update, I would test beta test it several times to make sure it works before going live.   At least that I do do software applications development.

Re: Symbian Anna update for USA N8s

Have the exact same problem and result. Of the 2 part Anna upgrade, only part 2 installed. Part 1 will not install.

I did reinstall Ovi Suite, but the install still didn't work. I then installed the new version (Nokia Suite) from Beta Labs and that gives the same error when trying to install the first part of the Anna update.

Phone seems to work fine and is faster. Only problem is that I can't sync contacts with Outlook 2010.  I've tried every fix I can find except one.  Planning on a complete removal of all Nokia from my PC which will included services and registry entries that the uninstaller leaves behind.  Perhaps that will work, but I don't have time know to do it.  In reading other post, this problem seems quite common.  I have hundreds of business contacts and add new ones all the time.   If I can't fix this, I'll need to change phones.

Re: Symbian Anna update for USA N8s

[ Edited ]

I got the same problem when updating to symbian anna this morning. At first time, I could only install 2/2. So I hard reset the phone (press #7370#), install FW 0.25 (the latest version of anna) via ovi suite and update again. This time, it works for me. You can update via OTA or ovi suite. During installing update, the phone will announe you to restart the phone; DO NOT RESTART MANUALLY. If it ask you to press OK to restart then do it. If not, just let it be.

Hard reset means formating everything in your phone (apps, mess, photos, etc). You might want to back up your phone and restore it later. However, I can't recover the game save. I lost all record of Fruit Ninja :smileysad: One more thing,  do not recover until installing all update.

I think you cannot update the phone due to the conflict of Qt in update package with Qt in your phone. If you install or used to install big screen, nokia screen saver, nokia drop ( or most apps in nokia beta labs); you might get the updating error.

Ps: remember to back up your phone, and hard reset not factory setting reset :smileyhappy: Hope it'll help you

Re: Symbian Anna update for USA N8s

I tried hoangnguyen2108's suggestion and it works.  Now I have Anna completely installed.

Clarification:  *#7370#, and then reinstall.  MOST IMPORTANT, BACKUP YOUR PHONE FIRST, SYNCH WITH YOUR PC--BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS LOST.

ALL MY EMAILS WERE LOST, but for me that was OK since I have duplicate on my PC.

I had to recreate all my email accounts, and redownload and install all the software I had downloaded previously.

My restore from backup did not seem to put everything back.

But anyway, thought I would share my experience with the community, and confirm that hoangnguyen2108's suggestion works.  So you all have two inputs.

I have tried 6 times earlier with the simple update, as I had shared with everyone.

Good luck to all.  Anna is so much faster.  Now the phone is much more pleasant to use.

Will update to share as I work on it the next few days or weeks.  Cheers (see, now I am not being as negative, and not **bleep** and moaning).
