@rayhipkiss: Now, that's an interesting comment Ray. I'm not sure how you can guarantee that Belle will be buggy and far from the finished product....

It's purely based on Nokias' past performance when it comes to updates. It's only a matter of time before the boards are flooded with complaints from people when they finally update to Belle.

Not me though because I don't think I'll bother with the update this time around. I'm regretting updating to Anna which I personally dislike.

Re: Symbian Belle

you'll miss out then...Belle is the upgrade everyone wants - Anna didn't do much visible apart from new icons and split screen & qwerty

Re: Symbian Belle

Nope. Won't be missing a thing as I've already got an Android phone so there's not much point in me updating to Belle.

Because I also own the N8 so I don't feel I'm wasting my time. The point I was making is that I see Belle as an attempt to keep Symbian fans happy by emulating the UI of Android and as I already have a proper Android device I don't particularly want my N8 to look the same.

If you dont want to look like android then do not update your phone with Belle. Why not look very advanced ? For me it is very well ...

You keep making interesting statements Ray, that must be hard for you to defend with any sort of logic. The only thing I can see in Belle that looks like Android is the notifications panel that slides down from the top of the screen. This is a good idea, obviously popular with Android users, and used in other systems in different ways (ie it's not a uniquely Android feature). For Nokia to 'borrow' the idea could be considered smart by some (including me).

If we followed your logic, we wouldn't be using Windows PC's with a mouse and icons because Apple first implemented these features (they didn't invent them though, as these ideas came out of the Xerox research labs). Of course there's a lot of borrowing of ideas in the industry, and that's a good thing - it's how developers like Nokia advance the usability of their devices.

Why would you decide that it's such a bad thing that you refuse to implement it on your device, when clearly you think it's a good idea (because you have a device with a 'proper' Android interface)?

Re: Symbian Belle

Let me make it perfectly clear. When S^3 was first released I liked the UI very much. It set the N8 apart from all those droids so for Nokia to copy that UI annoys me. I've never said that I think the Android UI is a good idea and just because I own a Galaxy S doesn't mean I like the Touchwiz interface. No, I only got the Galaxy because it was cheap and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about regarding Android.

Cheers.

Personally Ray, I believe its up to you as to what you do with your mobile. By the sounds of it you have found some issues appear on your N8 with the anna update. I own an E7 and honestly for me Anna made a world of difference to speed etc, It appears to be as fast as my mates samsung galaxy II or whatever it is. I also tend to think that all phone all seem to look very similar.

There appears to be many changes coming with Belle, what people have seen to date is not what its going to like entirely. Someone posted these links on another Belle thread https://projects.developer.nokia.com/Symbian_redesign

https://projects.developer.nokia.com/ramy9109

These seem very worthwhile. But you know each to their own, its your right to choose which update you install. I dont believe in this arguement that because everyone wants it that you must install it. However I figured if i can make my E7 go as fast as the new phones with a cpu that is twice as fast as mine, by simply install this update then I will definitely give it ago. And there is the promise of heap fo new software to go with it.

And even though it may or may not look like your driod based phone, at least you would not have to worry about being hacked as much as you would with the andriod phone.

Re: Symbian Belle

@ jraduga

Thanks for your intelligent response. It's the first time in a long time that someone has read and understood my opinion on Belle and responded in kind, without criticizing me personally. It often makes me laugh when fanboys get upset when I criticize Nokia and launch personal attacks on me.

Reading through those links I can see that Belle will be attractive to many Nokia users but I have one criticism. It's the proposed new keyboard layout omitting those punctuation marks from the main screen. If they do remove them, typing will become a whole lot slower for people like me who like to use punctuation. Also, the text selection function isn't a good idea either. That method features on my Galaxy S and is a bit fiddly to use, even on a 4" screen. Imagine trying to use it on the N8's 3.5" screen.

Anyway, I'm sure many people will be very happy with Belle when it's finally released.

All the best.

Re: Symbian Belle

@ jraduga
I definently agree with you when it comes to the proposed removal of the punctuation mark, an the comma to for that mather.. As I see it those keys are an essentional part of a keyboard for efficient and quick writing...

One thing that didn't seem clear to me was if the proposed remowal of those keys aplyes to the portrait keyboard only, or if it's intended for the landscape keyboard as well?? The lather I can see no good reason for doing, as the landscape keys are plenty big enogh, an i dont' have small fingers, more like average...

Thats ok, I knew who you meant lol.

I too have considered what ray mentioned about the punctuation, and I can definitely see for someone with say an N8 it could be an issue. At the time i wasnt concerned as I'm using an E7 which has a separate keyboard. I'm wondering whether or not its something that could be turned on or off at will, as well.

But Ray you are totally right, there have been times when to save space when typing a long sms, I have omitted the punctuation, and then after re-reading, found that the message lost some of its impact and definitely was no-where as readable as it could have been.

Re: Symbian Belle

I have been using Belle on my n8 for Weeks now and it is visually and performance improved from Anna and is what S^3 should have been in the beginning, only done small niggles with these Belle releases so the official one (hopefully not too far away) should be near perfect.
With regards to keyboard I agree with the points mentioned but I find Swype the ideal solution and have become very adept with it after using it since its release to the n97
Hope too enjoy official Belle with you all soon and that it lasts out my n8 experience or maybe 'carla'
