Re: Thoughts on Belle - it's horrible, that's my thought

gdd9000, if you "hack" the phone, how do you know that some of the issues you have are due to the hack or due to the phone?

The software changes are needed, and hopefully will be coming out sometime soon. I think it's now like any new Nokia, where the phone becomes available, Nokia listens to feedback, and eventually makes things better.

(At least I hope they will - if they don't care, what was the point in releasing Belle anyway? Since they've gone that far, maybe they can scrounge up a few software engineers to put the missing features back in place.)

permo, "my world" is somewhere in the middle. I love how the phone is so much more responsive, but I miss many things I had gotten used to.

I bet the guys who did Belle never really used Anna all that much, or they'd realize how many features they were leaving out....

Re: Thoughts on Belle - it's horrible, that's my thought

it is amazing how people in these threads say that they have no problem with belle, and that they enjoy belle.

when users spend their blood/sweat/tears/money/time negotiating with their belle-ified devices, one or two comes by and says "oh - belle - no problem at all"!

how amazing?!

Re: Thoughts on Belle - it's horrible, that's my thought

It's obvious that what you say is correct, but why is it "amazing"?

If I never created folders with my N8, the current limitations on folder creation would be meaningless to me, and I wouldn't have any concerns.

However, one of the things I personally like to do is to organize programs in folders, and sub-folders, and so on, and I find it  very annoying that this ability was removed.

You're giving me an idea though.  Maybe we should collect a list of all the things currently missing in Belle, and try to post it in order of "importance".  Everyone here could edit that list, and re-adjust it.  Maybe after a week or two, we'll have someting indicating which concerns matter the most to us.

We should probably try to organize the list, separating functions that just need a minor change to make something easier to do (such as changing home pages), from functions that are now completely lacking (such as a useable calendar).

Re: Thoughts on Belle - it's horrible, that's my thought

That is correct; Metal_might; it all depends on users demand and behaviour in operating smartphones in general and N8 special.

My pattern of use is quite allround I think and dealing with computer science daily I believe myself to be demanding when it comes to hardware; not so focused on software-just functioning "good" so I can do my work.

I know that no software is finished in ver. 1 as we can say Nokia Belle is.

Hopefully we can expect an update not so far away dealing with the things mentioned in the forum.

Only on this forum you have a heap of whiners. Most people are quite happy with Belle, not much to complain. That's why I did the upgrade, when I noticed most 'problems' reported here are just nonsense. Btw, when Anna was rolled out, it was exactly the same. Everybody here complained.

Re: Thoughts on Belle

People like metal might seem to complain just for the sake of it. I never had any kind of problems with my C6-01 ever since it was a simple S3. Updated it to Anna and now belle. While Anna was out, there were numerous complaints about this and that. Ppl dont seem to realise that they face problems when something is done wrong during the update process. And see the strange thing here- when Anna was out- ppl complained in hordes as I said, and now they are praising Anna as being the greatest ever update! Agree, belle needs some fine tuning by way of further updates, but claiming the entire update is not worthy is something too much.

Re: Thoughts on Belle

Nice post Mike... I'd like to just add a few lines. I now have weather widget from the original leaked version, the offline widget, the big analogue clock, the mechanical clock, the rss feed widget and the bookmark widget. Others which already are there and those which I don't use I haven't installed. And one important thing that I'd like to inform is I HAVEN'T HACKED my phone to install them and they're working FINE. :-) Having seen how well the widgets work, I'm wondering why Nokia decided to remove these from the final release of belle. Are you crazy NOKIA?

Re: Thoughts on Belle

Could you please do one of the following:

a) ideally, provide a link here for where people can find those widgets, or

b) send me a PM with the information.

I don't think Nokia will care about the links, as long as you say they're non official links to Nokia approved software. (If you've already posted the link, I'll go back and try to find it - maybe I missed it?)

Re: Thoughts on Belle

hi- let's not hijack mike myers' thread by turning it into a metal might bashing.

I have put my hard earned money on the machines. If they don't work, i have the right to complain/whine. If they work, i have the duty/generosity to praise. Pl read my other posts before making sweeping and offensive comments.

Coming to mike myer's posts: nokia is already doing it: collecting infos frm posts, compiling them, passing it on to R&D. We then wait for an update. How they're doing it is a mystery. The process you suggest would become redundant, as there already are too many such feature requests. Plus, managing the priorities in the requests, consolidating them, forwarding to R&D, tracking the update... Whew, is a full time job!

I'm sure you're right, but there is another way to look at it.  We have hundreds, if not thousands, or people here who are interested in this.  If we could find a way to organize it, so it became a summary of what we want, Nokia would have something "real" to work from, rather than a lot of opinions from an endless sea of people.

The first thing to do, would be to compile a simple list of all the problems to be resolved.

Well, in all those sites, its given as hacking your phone required. But I've used a simple technique to use those widgets without hacking. Download those widgets as individual installation sis files. (I haven't tried the all in one sis file, so can't vouch for it.) All those sis files are unsigned. I obtained a device specific developer certificate from OPDA site. Used free signer app in my mobile to individually sign all the apps. Then tried installing them one by one. One important thing. These widgets will work only if you install them in your C drive. What were the results?
The following widgets work perfectly...
Weather widget
offline widget
visual bookmark
big analogue clock
mechanical clock
rss feed widget
Ones that didn't work...
Data tracker widget... For some reason the app signing still doesn't make it work. Always gives requested access not granted error.
Music widgets
calendar widgets
The reason being these widgets already installed in the phone in one or another form. Trying to overcome it without hacking.
Others that I haven't tried yet are...
2G / 3G toggle
cellular toggle
Bluetooth toggle
silent mode toggle
because those options are already available in the drop down bar except first one which I don't use much. Still lots of mod widgets available but working on installing them without hacking. Hope this is useful to all.

Re: Thoughts on Belle

Thanks for posting.

Could you please elaborate on this: I obtained a device specific developer certificate from OPDA site. Used free signer app in my mobile to individually sign all the apps. Then tried installing them one by one.

How does one do this? Is there an article somewhere explaining how to get this to work?

www.n8fanclub.com/2010/10/how-to-get-opda-certificate-and-key-for.html?m=1 Check the above link to get detailed instructions on How to get a certificate and key file for your device... www.n8fanclub.com/2011/02/how-to-sign-apps-themes-games-on-nokia.html?m=1 Check out this link to know How to sign applications from your phone. Once you've got your certificate and key, store it in your phone. Install free signer in your phone and in the app's settings, browse and select the certificate and key for signing. Now add the belle widgets that you want to sign to the application one by one and select sign application when the pop up shows. Once all widgets that you want to sign have been added, select go to start signing. All signed apps will be stored in the same folder with 'signed' in the file name. Then install the belle widgets to C drive and restart phone to get working belle widgets. Hope you'll enjoy the new widgets just like me. All the best...

Re: Thoughts on Belle

Let's get back to the issues that we would like to see on Belle.

One comment was: "managing the priorities in the requests, consolidating them, forwarding to R&D, tracking the update... Whew, is a full time job!".

Why don't we try anyway?  We've got lots of people here, all of whom seem to be concerned about the future of Belle.  How about if everyone do the following.

Respond to this thread, listing your concerns, problems, etc.  However, please keep it one line per item.  Start off each line with a number from 0 to 9, with "0" meaning it's a wish-list, and "9" meaning it's extremely important and needs attention as soon as possible.

BUT.....   for anyone responding - please copy the preceding list, and add your additions to the list sorted by that initial digit - if it's just something you'd like to see added sometime, precede the line with a "0"and add your new entry to the bottom.  If it's critical (perhaps the calendar problem) precede it with a "9".

When you copy/paste, fix any errors you see - if something is longer than a single line, cut it off.  If it doesn't have any number preceding the line, just add a "0" and put it at the bottom.  Do feel free to adjust these numbers - if someting is listed as a "3" and you feel that's too low, change the number and re-sort the listings accordingly.

(Suggestion - I've done this many times before on my own system, www.sgrid.com.  The trick is to do the editing, copy/paste in an external editor, such as Notepad.)

I'll start this off - if enough people contribute, we'll have a full list of concerns for Nokia to review.

I found a bug in Belle. I am using my C7-00 with speakerphone HF-210 in my car. The voice dialing became now unreliable, because the device is no longer triggering the short audio signal, indicating that -speak now-.

I hope, Nokia will correct soon... For the time being, falling back to Anna.

I'm using an N8 with my Nokia CK-7W car kit and it is now virtually impossible to knw when to talk without looking at the screen. Occasionally there's a really quiet beep but if you're actually driving it's inaudible. Only thing I hate about Belle really. :smileymad: Most else I can live with.

Re: Thoughts on Belle

My improvement request (hope that any one in position reads this):

I want text selection capabilities similar like in Opera Mobile Browser (or dare to say, like on Android) in every application that works with text. My fingers are not particularly big (I am using the Nokia 700), but I just can't select precisely, especially when sitting in the bus in a stop and go traffic. The highlighted text is either longer or shorter than intended. I've seen the solution on Adnroid phones and it is just soo easy there making text selections.

In applications like the email client you can't select text at all, unless you use the workaround by clicking on forward (or reply) and select the text then in the message that is opened for editing.

That's it for now, I hope something will happen, since this is buggin probably not only me.

Regards,

Dr Arpad Jakab
