Re: What 'WE" need from NEXT 5800 FIRMWARE!!

i'd like nokia to address all the silly & unnecesary prompts & messages. some are required, but i've been downloading from ovi store for my phone model, so why the messages "...not compatible with this phone, continue anyway?" it happens with 5800 themes aswell, come on nokia, you need to tidy this lot up! s60 is a mess, basic phones can do all this simply, without all the unnecesary bloat.

setting alarms... TWO messages, one telling me what i have done (yes, i know, i just did it) & one telling me how many hours & minutes before the alarm goes off. who cares? let me go to sleep already!

It looks like Nokia are definitely considering it, although it will probably be another 3-4 months (and definitely after the release of the 5530XM) until the firmware update is released.

Try using Nimbuzz, a freeware or going straight to MSN mobile on your web browser.

HAHAHA not even the LEAST ambitious requests on here came true! But the wording of this thread title still applies ... now it just applies to the NEXT next firmware, which will be in who-knows-how-long from now.

Oh well.

Re: What 'WE" need from NEXT 5800 FIRMWARE!!

I think it will take months (or even years) to fix all the problems at 5800 XM. Since this phone is a new one that's why it haves so many problems.

What about the N97, its newer. I guess it also haves..

..much!

Re: What 'WE" need from NEXT 5800 FIRMWARE!!

I don't think it's that they don't care, but rather that they have spread themselves too thin.  Nokia has COUNTLESS numbers of currently supported phones out there, judging by what's available on the Nokia Europe product page.  Their brand new $600+ flagship phone, the N97, is simply riddled with hardware flaws and software bugs, and is well on its way to being a flop.

Compared to all their other issues, the 5800 is actually quite a good phone.  People expect to install a new firmware and not hard reset their phones, so fine they will have to deal with a buggy half-firmware update. Sure Nokia is at fault for claiming to have UDP that doesn't *truly* perserve the integrity of the experience. But once you figure that out, as an intelligent human being you should go ahead and just hard reset your phone until Nokia DOES figure out seamless firmware updates.

All the extra features that we (myself included) are "demanding" ... well we are in no position to demand, because nokia NEVER advertised a plugin-based homescreen for this phone.  We see it on another phone, and "assume" we should have it too, so we complain like little bit**es then cry when we don't get what we want immediately.

Calm down people ... Nokia will throw some more firmware updates at us.  So far we've had one pretty much every 3 months since the phone came out.

Sheesh!

I couldn't agree more, except for one thing.

A hard reset should only be attempted as a last resort. By all means soft-reset the phone (*#7370#) when you update, although I've found that if you do it when the phone is brand new, before you've even saved any contacts or anything on it, then you don't have to do it again at a later date.

Re: What 'WE" need from NEXT 5800 FIRMWARE!!

What do you think? I doubt it..well what ever...

Android all the way now, Getting the HTC Hero, you guys can't imagine what Nokia meant to me. Even when people were "Iphone-Iphone" I was "Nokia is the best", I had N958GB then, Thought I'd upgrade to 5800 and show those iphoners what Nokia could do, What an embarrasment. I cancelled my N97 order after the buggy V5 interface and after I found out that processor was slower, How can N97 which has a virtual keypad and has better features than the Iphone have slower processor ?? Why ?? Cause Apple thinks about the future as well, even if they make newer models they can still have plenty of processor for updates.

Nokia you are losing it.. learn something from Apple, anywhich way it's better, hardware wise and Software wise as well. After more than 11 years with Nokia, I feel bad for you Nokia, you suck , You actually do, you are no longer the old Nokia, you want money more than quality now...

Re: What 'WE" need from NEXT 5800 FIRMWARE!!

in terms of improving usability, an easy fix would be to let users choose a standard input method for landscape mode - for example: I would like to use alphanumeric when in portrait mode, and fully qwerty when in landscape.

this would be a small modification to make, but would add a lot in terms of user experience, i think

Re: What 'WE" need from NEXT 5800 FIRMWARE!!

1. please improve the camera firmware! the hardware is good but the qualty of pics is way below to other comparable 3 MP phone cameras. The noise is too much!

2. Please add the possibility to freely choose the number of shortcut symbols in the start menu. as of now, max. number is 4, but I would like to have at least 6-8 at my fingertips for immediate start.

3. Please improve the GPS!!! Although I have enabled GPRS access (for A-GPS), it still lasts appr. 5 minutes till the phone establishes a GPS satellite signal. That's waay too long.

4. Please improve the internal browser's flash capabilities. I can't participate in any flash-based chat on the web.

5. Please add the ability to "download image" in the default browser.

6. Please give more opportunities to move programs from C: to the memory card, in order to free up memory on C:

thanks!

Re: What 'WE" need from NEXT 5800 FIRMWARE!!

come on, I read through tons of forums, boards and gathered all information I could get from all over the web. By that, my 5800 runs just fine and serves me very well.

O.K., I am bit disappointed about the camera, but hey, it's a phone, not a dedicated camera.

So, I get a mobile device that lets me:

- phone, send and receive SMS, MMS

- make some quick photo shots (low quality, but enough to catch some impressions)

- organize all my dates and tasks

- pass my business e-mails to me in real time (Exchange Mail)

- allows for almost unlimited web surfing, except for some flash based applications such as chat

- is a very good Mp3 player with lots of storage memory and good sound quality

- is an excellent little video player. I just recoded Casino Royal from DVD to mp4 and had a truly amazing cinema-experience.

- it allows me to read office documents

- it allows me to make use of maps and GPS based applications (although that doesn't work perfectly yet)

heck, this little beast does everything I did not even dare to  dream off a few years ago. (well, that's my first smartphone), and I am still in the process of discovering all of its capabilities.

I mean, the Nokia 5800 XM does comprise 1000x more processing power and capabilities than the entire computer system in Houston control center during the Eagle Apollo 11 mission. If they were able to reach the moon, heck what could we do with the 5800 if we were only patient enough to get familiar with all of its amazing functions functions and capabilities.

Of course, that doesn't mean that Nokia should not try to improve it. But I think we should have a little more respect for the guys who engeneered this little masterpiece of technology.
