n73: RM-132 vs RM-133 - 3g support?

Hey guys, last week I told you that the RM-132 seens to not support the 3G network...

I told that cause of my experience using the RM-133 and now the RM-132...

In the RM-132 the GSM only or UMTS support dissapears from the settings menu and the 3G icon never appear in the screen again...

Well, never before last weekend...

I just went to travel to a far city where my phone don´t receive the operator signal.. For my surprise when the phone finish searching for the normal GSM signal, the 3G icon pop up in the screen!

Damn! Now I´m really confused!

Re: n73: RM-132 vs RM-133 - 3g support?

I got RM-132 too. If it doesn't support 3G, why it has the cam, supposely the same hardware... I remember I read that when people changed their firmware to the Music Edition, 3G had been enabled, wich means the phone has the same hard, just the soft is limiting... Anyone confirms

HUH ??? Nokia N73-5 does not support 3G ??? what the hell ??? My handset is also N73-5 model. I purchsed this handset in India. It is RM132 handset. i bought this handset thinking it's a 3G handset as Nokia proudly says. Now i come to know that it does not support 3G and still Nokia sell it at same price that of N73. These 2 types of N73 normal are nowhere mentioned in technical details of N73 on Nokia website.

My handset is still under warranty. Is there any chance Nokia will replace it with 3G handset ???

Re: n73: RM-132 vs RM-133 - 3g support?

Nice question. Didn't saw this point before. They sell both at the same price, that's at least unfair. Mine is under warranty too...

Well, as i said, I remember that time when some were changing their N73 normal edition to music edition and many said 3G was enable that time. In my opinion (selling both at same price confirms it) is that it has everything it needs, I mean hardware, but what disables it is the firmware, made to work specifically for some operators wich doesn't offer 3G (my case, TIM here in Brazil).

Well, dunno if someone can confirm it. If so, please let us know!!!
(it would be very nice if they replace our phones under warranty with other that supports 3G)

what's the point in disabling it by firmware...i had 6630 with 3g..and in the settings you can disable WCDMA if u want....

u can check the wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N73

3g requires special chip...n91 had two versions one with 3g and one without 3g..there was price difference between the two models...

sooon i will be posting details on my blog http://techtemper.blogspot.com

Re: n73: RM-132 vs RM-133 - 3g support?

well, people who changed the product code do change to Music edition had 3G enable after that...Despite its sold at the same price for both.

Disabling 3G forces the customer to stay with the operator than migrating for another wich already offers 3G. That's a point to consider.

For exemple, from the 3 biggest cell phone operator here, (Tim,Claro and Oi) only Claro is now offering 3G, while the others doesen't, YET. If i would like to use 3G with my phone, I just need to buy a chip from Claro and start using. Untill 2 months ago, lcked phones were freely sold. Now, it's forbidden because it conflicts with a law that says a customer has the freedom to choose, as he paid and own the product, whoever he wants to provide services, including telephony. The lock on phone had that intention, to make users be "attatched" to the operator, same way the disabling 3G feature.

Another one to confirm that the firmware can enable 3G (of course nothing really confirmed, just facts that leads us to believe it)

Re: n73: RM-132 vs RM-133 - 3g support?

Hi guys,

N73-5 does support 3G. Please refer to the mail that i received from Nokia usa.

Dear Sridhar,

Thank you for e-mailing the Nokia Care Contact Center.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your e-mail message and greatly appreciate your patience.

We understand your inquiry in regard to your Nokia N73 device being the Music Edition and if it supports Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA), also known as 3G.

Your Nokia N73 device does support WCDMA (3G); however, it only supports the 2100 frequency. This means you will be unable to access WCDMA in the United States, since the U.S. only supports 850 and 1900 frequencies currently.

In regards to your inquiry about which Nokia N73 device you have, the Nokia N73 Music Edition device has a dedicated music key that looks like a music note on the keypad. The Music Edition is also completely black, and is not available in the United States through Nokia USA.

We hope you find this information useful.

If you have any additional questions, please contact us. To ensure proper handling, please continue to use the current subject line.

Thank you for choosing Nokia for your mobile needs.

@iyersri

The mail from Nokia which you have pasted here clearly shows that they are talking bout Nokia Music Edition and NOT N73-5 RM 132 model. Please note that everyone alerady knows N73 music edition is 3G phone.

We are talkin bout N73-5 RM 132 model here.

Re: n73: RM-132 vs RM-133 - 3g support?

Hi, guys pretty new to the game.

I have a nokia N73 v2.0738.3.1.1
18-09-2007
RM--132
I was led to believe that it supported 3g video calling. To my disgust the 3g icon never appears even though i'm in a 3g covered area. When i checked under network settings for setup, it only gave me the automatic option.....Please tell me what i need to do to enable video calling..
I'm currently residing in South Africa.

Any help at all will be appreciated
