Expert Needed! - Sim card registration failed - N73

Hi,

I have a Nokia N73 I bought from ebay (i know, i know!) that is Orange locked. It came with the box, charger and usb lead. I bought a pay as you go sim card from Orange and put this in the phone. I have registered the SIM card and everytime I switch the phone on it comes up "SIM card registration failed". When I try to make a call I get "connection error", although I can send text messages successfully and it appears to connect to the Orange network and 3G is also connecting. I have tried the Orange SIM card in another (unlocked) phone and it appears to work fine. I have tried another Orange SIM card in the N73 and get the same problem.

I phoned Orange support and explained the symptons. They immediatly checked if the phone had been reported stolen and it hasnt. The seller from ebay had been registered for 5 years selling phones and had 100% feedback rating so it made sense for the phone not to be stolen. Now the weird thing is this phone worked once, it connected and I made a call. But upon powering on and off again the phone returned to giving me the "SIM card registration failed" error. I have the latest firmware and reinstalled just in case. I have formatted the phone and searched endlessly on the net for a solution. I have tried GSM only and then back to dual mode but still no luck. If the phone was blocked then Orange would have told me over the phone and it wouldnt have connected successfully that one time.

I am waiting for the next firmware to be available to me in hope that it might fix something (3.0713.1.0.2). I am not going to update the firmware manually using tools out there as it just looks like way to much hassle that may not work, so Nokia hurry with making the new firmware available! I am waiting for a callback from Orange but I know there just going to tell me to take it to the manufacturer of the handset. Where do I stand if I take it to a Nokia Service Centre? Is it possible a reflash would fix this issue? Could I get the handset replaced if its faulty? Its pratically never been used.

Any help or information would be appreciated as I really like this phone and now just want to use it as my regular phone.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Hi missinlinx

I always thought that you were never safe until 30 days have elapsed with an "ebay phone", in case it was reported missing! Activity is monitored and the act of inserting a different SIM probably triggered this response.

Have you thought of accessing CheckMend yourself as Orange don't seem to be very helpful so far?

Happy to have helped forum in a small way with a Support Ratio = 37.0

Re: Expert Needed! - Sim card registration failed - N73

Hi scoobyman,

I just checked with checkmend and it came back the handset is NOT lost, stolen or blocked. I remember trying my friends Orange SIM card in the phone when I first got it, before I got my pay as you go SIM card from Orange and I dont remember seeing the SIM card registration failed error. Could this have triggered something off? Any suggestions as to what I can do?

Thanks,

Mike

get in touch with orange again ...as you say theyve imei checked & said its ok...sometimes they need to manually configure things at their end...e.g once a friend of mine owned a handset- the handset was legitimate, however as soon as an orange sim was inserted it would fail to make or receive calls...so I called up orange & they took the SIM serial number 8944... then told me they would have it fixed in 30 minutes ...then a little while later it was all rectified :smileyhappy: make sure you speak to someone who knows what theyre doing :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Expert Needed! - Sim card registration failed - N73

Ok I got a replacement SIM card sent from Orange, registered it and still get the same "SIM card registration failed" error so I have no idea what to do now... I suppose my only option now is to take it to a Nokia Service Centre. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Mike
