The scammers get your number from the personal details that the mobile networks sell on to 3rd party companies (mailing lists). Sometimes the numbers are also chosen at random.

The email addresses are always the biggest clue in a scam.

On a side note, possibly tangential.

I haven't received any of these texts, however, I have suddenly started getting "tip" texts from Nokia. They seem to be real. Does upgrading to Software v21 on a N95 kick off these messages?

Only if you accepted the tips and tricks prompt that appeared. Not sure how you stop them.

Subscribing to "My Nokia" is what triggers them.

Actually they're a bit of a PITA being somewhere around the level of "tip: how to switch your phone on", and the firmware update notifications are for a phone branded with my operator's firmware while I use an unbranded phone, but I do use the "My Nokia" service to do on-line backups of my contacts and calendar.

So, I went into my settings, said that I wanted to receive the tips by e-mail only and gave an e-mail address on my domain that doesn't exist.

Re: Is there any NOKIA UK promo going on?

Of course it's a hoax. Think about it. Why on earth would Nokia be using a live.com (hotmail) e-mail address? Also, the local part of the e-mail address, "nokiaclaims144", suggests that the first 143 have been deleted for violations of hotmail's terms of service (such as spamming...) or at least that your hoaxers expect that to happen.

Yes, "how to switch your phone on"  is a rather pointless, if not somewhat inane tip! :smileyvery-happy:

This thread is evidence in itself as to why people still attempt this kind of scam...

Standard scam mail. If you feel that a bank is being fraudulent (which I seriously doubt) then report it to the police.
