N95 Firmware update (v13, v20... whatever it's sup...

New firmware or just a test/development build?

Nokia have a service where you can connect to a remote phone and control it as you would your PC over a remote desktop connection. Of the various models available, there is a standard N95 and also a special firmware revision model.

I include screenshots from the system having typed *#0000# into the two different models respectively:

Standard N95
Special revision N95

You will notice that the latter image displays firmware v21.0.001 in there. I have no idea if this is a firmware revision that is going to be released or whether it is just a special test version on Nokia's remote platform... I am NOT saying this is the new firmware version - I post this merely for interest sake.

The software on the phone was limited and it did not look like a full build to me so I'm really not sure what's what there - let's hope this is a sign that a new revision is actually in the works though!

Re: N95 Firmware update (v13, v20... whatever it's supposedly going to be...)

Guys this is regarding my previous post about updating my n95 next Sunday with the new firmware, I couldn’t wait till Sunday so I went to the main workshop and I asked them to fixed my problem with the n95 which was receiving SMS from my contact and I don’t get their name shown only their number. So they took the mobile and fixed that problem within 20 min, however the firmware was still 12.0.0.13 and when I asked them about the update they say this is just a fixing to the current version there is no available update yet  my problem is fixed now but there is no update.
For me that was the only problem I’m facing with the current version and it was fixed, but I was excited to have new update news so I share it with you to fix all your n95 problems I’m really sorry that I disappointed you guys 

Re: N95 Firmware update (v13, v20... whatever it's supposedly going to be...)

guys you know what i realise. nokia released a firmware on wrt rda whatever for developers to test their apps before and they informed them. why didnt they inform the punlic of a release or test firmware, we had to go snooping around to find it. nokia should of told us so we know whats going on. even the acceleratormeter was kept under wraps untill recently, i dont like the way nokia do things at all.

I explained why earlier... had they given even the slightest ETA and been unable for whatever reason to deliver, they would've received emails in the thousands demanding an explanation as to why the update wasn't available on time.

Don't pretend it's not the case... been there, done that and worked in the IT/Telecom industry long enough to know any different...

Re: N95 Firmware update (v13, v20... whatever it's supposedly going to be...)

Yes, fine - I completely agree. I myself am in the middle of an IT project on which I had to give a completion date. It has gone wildly wrong and I am very behind; the clients are snapping at my heels every day, so trust me I do understand...

This is still no excuse for not announcing anything at all! It would be quite easy to say "the firmware is under development, there is no release date set at this time". As I said before, there is absolutely no commitment to a deadline in that statement. The only way that would be a problem is if they are not actually going to release an update, but if that is the case then that steers this conversation down a very different route.

Nokia were quite able to slide the NGage launch from it's original projected date range for release... why not this? And frankly, even if it did create tonnes of emails for them to have to deal with, so be it! When you pay as much for a phone as you do a reasonable PC or ANY of the currently available next generation games consoles available on the market, they should give some customer support!

Once again, if Nokia release a product which doesn't work properly or one that wasn't properly tested (which is clear has been the case here and with many other recent Nokia phones) then it IS their responsibility to fix it, preferably quickly and keep their customer base informed. The phone is still under warranty and I am unable to get my money back under the terms of my phone contract. A new replacement phone will have the same failings so the only route is to provide updated firmware or to leave customers to put up with substandard phones. Nokia's behaviour is sending a clear message, rightly or wrongly, that the latter is the course of action they have chosen.

You say you have worked in IT - what do you think would happen if you delivered a product/service which then failed to operate properly, then promptly stop responding to the client, all the while working on the fixes. Do you think the client would sit there patiently for 5 months and just say nothing? Most likely the client would start taking legal action... now there's an idea...

Re: N95 Firmware update (v13, v20... whatever it's supposedly going to be...)

And can I just say, that I started this thread 19 days ago... during that time there have been 3 weeks and 15 business days in which Nokia could have made some effort to respond or quell customer dissatisfactions on this matter.

Oh wait, they did do something... they asked a major Symbian site to remove postings about new firmware from their news section.

Hmm!

Re: N95 Firmware update (v13, v20... whatever it's supposedly going to be...)

No!

Not a chance. I did that with my N93. They both cost me far too much money. If my TV, DVD player, VHS, PC, washing machine, PS2, home cordless phone, fridge, microwave, hi-fi, camcorder, car, bike - well in fact anything I bought was as unreliable as this I could take it back. I don't see why, as a consumer, I or anyone else should sit and just swallow this.

I'm not getting into a personal debate - I wish to continue discussing this and responding to posts on this and other threads, and so I will, within forum guidelines of course.

Re: N95 Firmware update (v13, v20... whatever it's supposedly going to be...)

Its not the same thing as your microwave, because its a piece of hardware that goes through revisions and gets outdated within a certain time frame.

I'm just telling you to get over it for now and relax... you're posting way too much and I'm getting scared that you're a crazy man!

Re: N95 Firmware update (v13, v20... whatever it's supposedly going to be...)

Stop_gap isn't a crazy guy, he's just someone who not once, but unfortunately TWICE has shelled out a rather large amount of hard earned money to support nokia and buy their latest offering...

Thus done he has not once but TWICE been shafted in the butt by them not updating or correcting bugs in their software...

A lot of us spent a long time waiting for this phone, even more of us spend a *LOT* of money on it, and now we're stuck with a barely usable phone, that is rather sickly with bugs and reboots...

And when we bang on nokia's cage to find out when/if we can expect relief from our woes, instead of reassurance and acknowledgement that there's a problem with the phone and they're working fevereshly to fix it... we get, "The Sounds of Silence"

Stop_gap and the rest of us are not breaking the forums rules by venting our frustrations, we're just sharing our problems in the hope that maybe, just maybe some of this noise will eventually **bleep** off the right people or fall on the right set of ears and trigger some kind of *USEFUL* response...

Re: N95 Firmware update (v13, v20... whatever it's supposedly going to be...)

I agree with your comments totally.

I dont mind waiting a good few weeks for a stable update, but the annoying fact is there are thousands os n95-1 users who have been left in the dark on whether there will be an update or not.

Surely it is now time for Nokia to make an official announcement on if there is an update in development due for release to the general public or no.

Lets face it, if theres is an update comming for this model, I will be very happy, I dont even mind waiting until after xmass, as long as I know there is something in the pipeline.

There is no point in complaining though, the only way to make a difference is to vote with your feet and stop buying products, that is the only time when the end-user can make a difference to the way a leading manufacturer treats its customers.

Unfortunately Nokia is the No.1 smartphone manufacturer and the competition isnt exactly strong in this kind of specialist phone.
This may change over the next few years, and until there is an alternative I think we are going to be stuck with this level of support.

Lets wait and see what happens.....
