i dont have a c6 but n8. i think the connectivity setting is almost the same.
settings > connectivity > settings > data use.. here u can select how u like to access internet.
and for the software update: check here
I suggest that you change into always ask. If i am not mistaken then there are background applications(like mail and gps too if it is selected to online) that need to connect to internet. Thats why it connects when u select when needed. If select it to always ask it will ask u if u want to connect to internet.

Sorry i didn't read ur reply carefully.
i think that ur mail app synchronises time to time. To set your Email application to retrieve emails manually then launch Email and edit the settings of your email account (s). In the Synchronise section locate the retrieval days option and un-tick all the days. This will mean that the email app will only sync when you launch the app.
Or ur map application, set it to offline
As i already said i dont have a c6 so i am unable to help u accurately. At least i can try
by the way how come nokia support doesn't reply here
I hope this helps because it's working fine and my c7 isn't connected to the internet unless I tell it so.
you have to delete your internet access point, then the device will connect to the internet by other access points like 3G and MMS but eventually it will disconnect.
After sometime get your internet access point.
Actually all I mentioned in my previous reply was wrong.
I found that an application is causing the set to connect to the internet.
it's called WhatsApp
its settings are 1- to start automatically when the mobile restarts.
2- its hidden settings tells to connect to the internet always.
I found out about after I uninstalled it.
Here is how disable automatic connect by WhatsApp on Nokia C5 , n hope it works for C6 too.
Go to: Settings-> Settings -> Connection -> Destinations-> Internet : then u will find the Access Point provided by ur operator.. Then go down the list and find the following fields:
<User Name> type any name u like,
<Prompt Password> make it Yes, after that
<Password> choose any password u like>,
Authentication : choose Secure,
Use Access Point : choose After Confirmation.
then u r done, Anytime WhatsApp or any other Application tries to connect to the internet, it will ask for the User Name
and Password, this way it won't connect unless u allow it.
The above method help saves ur balance from deduction but consumes battery due to asking u the name and password every time it connects..
